Justification for the wealthy? Easy as pie. Throw wads of cash at "carbon-neutral" places like this to expiate your guilt. Sort of like the sales of indulgences centuries ago.
While a nice idea, it really isn't a quid pro quo situation. Let's say my car produces 500kg of CO2. I go and buy "carbon credits" at some carbon-trading company that plants trees for me. Trouble is, saplings are going to take a heckuva long time to get large enough to start really absorbing a significant amount of CO2. In the meantime, assuming climate predictions are accurate, the Earth is getting warmer and CO2 being produced faster than the saplings can absorb and stock up...
