I've used CodeStuff Starter before, but it's been a while.

I've used msconfig myself.
Start-Run msconfig

Be careful, though. Mess around with "Startup". The others need some research before trying out.

Spybot is very good. Even tells you a bit about each thing starting.

your best bet is
START
RUN
type "msconfig"
go to startup, and uncheck any UNNESSISARY items.

obviously, be careful, if you accedently stop something from starting that needs to (a system serivce for example), you may have a bit of a problem...

System services reside in the "Services" tab.
Startup isn't that dangerous to mess around with. Firewalls and antiviruses also reside in the "Services" tab.

If your computer is a bit old the Services tab might be worth investigating as a last resort (but it takes research. There you can really mess up your system). Lots of unecessary services are started at boot.

what i meant, was that sometimes system drivers can also be listed under startup....

I've always had success with Startup Inspector. It's free, too.

I am studying MS VB05 right now, so if you can give me any tips or need some help on something I would be glad to help(or try).
