I just ordered a comp with Vista on Sunday, I hope it is not as bad as it appears!
If you got 2G of RAM in it you'll be fine. My Dell desktop came with Vista (they didn't give a choice when I ordered mine) and it is fine speed-wise for me (with that said, I don't require lightening speed). I also have a Samsung Q1u UMPC that is running Vista on a new generation Intel 800MHz processor. It's definitely a lot slower than my dual-core desktop, but for a 9 X 5 inch device that is quite portable, not bad.
As for the original question on this thread; I agree with those that suggest sticking with XP :approve:

You'll be fine. Vista is OK ... my advice is to anyone who's running XP. If you have XP, stay put. If you buy a new machine with Vista already on it, then that will be fine.

Well, if i go vista does my new specs sound good? Apple updated the macbook pro a day after i got mine, so i returned it and i got a new macbook pro and a ipod because I'm a student. Now, if i got vista home premuim, would i still be able to play games like CS:S? Would aero take alot of graphic space? The reason im thinking vista is because i've already used xp, and i would like to try something new. Plus oem vista home premuim is 120. But, if you think thats not the way to go i will gladly get xp.
New Specs:
* 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
* 1440 x 900 resolution
* 2GB memory
* 120GB hard drive1
* 8x double-layer SuperDrive
* NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics with 128MB SDRAM
I have an excellent pc box. 2 gig ram, 256 Video card, blah. Anyways I got Vista for FREE from work. After about 1 month I went back to XP. The 1st turn off is even with a nice system it is noticeably SLOWER then XP. It does the same as XP just in a different way for the most part, nothing ground breaking. The 2nd and BIGGEST reason is almost ALL of my software required an upgrade (NOT FREE OF COURSE MOST WERE 20-70$) to run on vista. I.E. Norton 2006, Nero 7 ultra, Photoshop CS3 among others. So it is definitely a waste of money and speed IMHO.

well i just upgraded my gateway GT5238E with 1GB RAM and intel core 2 duo processor a 224MB video ram to vista premium last week and it runs jus as great as xp did, if not better because xp used to freakout with the drop boxes after usin IE tabs for too long, that doesnt happen in vista as bad i jus close then reopen and im good to go again,whereas with xp i had to restart the whole computer to get those dropdowns workin again, and i didnt have to pay anything for the software updates because they also came FREE on a disc
Vista if you have at least 2GB RAM and a Dual Core processor and a good graphics card like a 8800 or a 2900. XP is still the best for gaming because it doesnt use up loads of RAM. Vista is faster than XP though i had Vista and XP on different partitions so i could dual boot. Vista has some nice effects and less blue screens and errors but if you want a system that you dont need to upgrade everything for get a mac lol. If you get a disk editor you can create 2 partitions with your XP without having to delete anything and Vista but you have to have at least the space on your hard drive for Vista to install onto. If you have an older graphics card then it is slower i just had to buy a new graphics card so i got a X1950GT for £120 or something and it runs BF2 fine on vista the only thing is because ive only got 1GB of Ram it loads every 2 seconds! I might upgrade to vista when i get a new CPU and 2GB of RAM but not for another few months.
u can turn the vista special fx off if it runs slower its not like ur being forced to keep aero on, i cant believe ppl still like stayin in the past, thats conservative i tell u,u hafta move on with technology thats y the govt is gettin rid of analog

Get Vista. Apple already made the drivers for vista so there's no issues with your hardware. Vista is much faster with 2 GB ram than XP is with 2 GB ram. If you had only 1 GB, I would get XP media center edition, but with 2 GB things just run much faster in vista. Just turn windows defender off or the hard drive noises will drive you crazy. Vista is also much better with widescreen than XP is.
Enjoy the shiny notebook!

If you know how to edit the registry you may really speed up the system by disabling the swap file to the disk and use the memory instead.
