Re: Downgrading to Win98?

Good idea?: Not really. Windows 98 isn't very stable compared to Windows XP. Also, if your drive is NTFS instead of FAT32, Win98 can't run on NTFS partitions.

Couldnt I get it for free, 'cause I'm downgrading?: Not a chance.

I'm no expert, but Win98SE is, in my opinion, not a downgrade from WinME. I would take it over ME any day. However, if you are switching to a different OS, go with WinXP.

Whatever you do, get the heck away from WinME - what a nightmare.

If you are going XP, go with XP Professional if you think there is a chance you'll be doing any ASP web development or learning. XP Home doesn't allow IIS to be run.

I am using ME now...and compared to 98 there is no comparison. I am not sure if I am a loner on this, but I love ME compared to 98....98 was always crashing on me....ME....perfect (well, almost)

nb- And from the headaches I have heard about driver problems updating to XP, I think that I will stick with it for a while!

Win2000 is still in my opinion the most stable Windows build around at the moment. WinXP is trying to catch up, but is still not quite as stable for me. In the years of running Win2000, I have never had it lock up a single time....and have had an uptime of several months, which was only interrupted due to a power outage. With WinXP, I've had several lockups....but nothing as bad as Win95/98/98SE/ME.

Also, on the note of a "free" downgrade, it is not true unless you have a corporate volume license. Even if you wanted to downgrade all the way back to Windows 3.0, you'd still have to purchase a license for it. Instead of going back to 98....I suggest that you upgrade to either Win2000 (my top choice) or WinXP.

Windows Me is a very poor OS. I would go with Win98, Win2k or WinXP. Dont worry about the NTFS you just have to fdisk your harddrive in order to go from that too fat32 its not a biggy. Win98 is far more superior than Me.

Just my two cents

That's the amazing thing about Windows. Everybody has had their problems with one OS, while the other works ok. I've found WinME to be rather slow compared to Win98SE.

I upgraded my PIII-550Mhz (hardly cutting-edge) and had no problems. The stability has been great. I did upgrade my RAM, however.

I have to agree with Deftech, though I find XP Pro and 2K both equally stable.
While 'downgrading' to a previous OS would be cool were it free - it isnt. Best bet would be to look on eBay and see who is selling their old Win98SE disk.

On a lighter note on the subject of I wish it were free...
When Win2K came out I - being the geek I am - ran out and bought it... after a brief install I cracked the CD in half and ended up having to run out to the store to buy another copy so I could install some additional software... Hmm.... maybe sell my extra Win2K license to make up the double I payed for the OS?

Okay... dream mode is now over....

You are all dutifully returned to reality once again....
