Cops: Man ran over woman with shopping cart at Somers supermarket checkout

By TERENCE CORCORAN
THE JOURNAL NEWS

(Original publication: July 19, 2007)
SOMERS - Call it a case of shopping-cart rage.

State police said a 45-year-old Dutchess County man became enraged at a 72-year-old woman who was in front of him at the checkout line of the Super Stop & Shop on Route 6 last night and ran her over with his shopping cart.

James Curcio of Hillside Road, Poughquag, continued pushing the shopping cart out the door, despite not paying for the groceries, then beat a retreat in his car, police said.

The 72-year-old woman was treated at Hudson Valley Hospital Center in Cortlandt and released.

Sgt. Joseph Lutz said the woman was checking out about 9:15 p.m. and was processing her debit card when Curcio became impatient and bumped her with his cart.

"She then said something to him. He got mad, hitting her twice with the cart and knocking her over before he fled," Lutz said.

Store employees ran outside and got a description of Curcio's vehicle and its license plate. They also prevented him from escaping with the groceries.

A short time after the incident at the store in the Somers Commons Shopping Plaza near the Putnam line, troopers learned that Curcio showed up at the Putnam County Hospital Center, claiming that he was attacked and robbed at the Stop & Shop, police said.

Troopers Paul Carinci, Linda Holmes and Timothy Gleason took Curcio into custody at the hospital and charged him with second-degree assault, a felony, and petty larceny, a misdemeanor, for removing $85 worth of groceries from the store, police said.

Curcio was arraigned before Somers Town Justice Michael J. McDermott, who sent him to the county jail without bail. Curcio is due back in court on Monday.

This is so ridiculous. I guess the commercials saying 'everything is easier (and implying faster) with VISA' are wrong!
