My son, age 9, is a photo and video enthusiast; he has been making and editing short video clips with a digital camera, but now we're hoping to step up to a camcorder for his productions. I'm looking for advice on what to buy for an entry-level device that has some potential for his creativity; our Costco has a discount on a Canon dc220 dvd machine that looks interesting. I'd love to hear recommendations or be pointed to a website that is the camcorder equivalent of aximsite (good ideas and great people). Thanks.
I've got a little Aiptek digital video camera. Records onto SD cards and makes good VGA video. I think my wife spent about $100 on it for me last Christmas.
- What do you need in terms of quality?
- What scene will you be doing the most?
- Which medium do you prefer? Personally, I will never buy a DVD camcorder.
I would also recommend a sd based camera.
Pictured below is a model for $110 at best buy.
These cameras are cheap, small, and still have decent video quality. The advantage to using an sd card based camera to a dvd camera is simple, you buy one sd card and it will last a lot longer thatn going through dvds. That way ur son can experiment around and wont have to worry about dvds being used/burned. It also probably conserves battery life, and makes the device more resistant.

Thanks--your advice helped me greatly. We had an Aiptek and used it to its limits; we couldn't capture much in indoor light, but outdoors it worked great. Your replies prompted me to search a little more and, as luck would have it, today's Circuit City flyer had a notice about their sale on a Panasonic SDR S10; it records to sd cards, has a 10x zoom, and handles moderate indoor light well. (It is also quite compact, somewhat waterproof, and can handle moderate drops--good qualities, indeed!) My son has been experimenting with it this afternoon and approves heartily. It fills a spot in between an Aiptek and a more deluxe (and expensive) camcorder--seems just right for us.
Whatever you do, don't spend too much. Digital Video Cameras keep going down in price. Make sure you check all your options, whether one with MiniDV, DVD or Hard Drive, anything with simple controls and easy transfer for editing will be the best way to go. Good Luck.
This one is a pretty good starter camera that does everything you need with a nice price. Sony DCR-HC28 Mini DV digital camcorder at Crutchfield.com
I have a $20 off friend code from crutchfield, so let me know if you decide to buy from there, PM me for the code. ;)
