Verizon DSL with Westell Modem, wireless setup of Linksys wifi
Hello Everyone,
I am having trouble setting up my modem with my linksys router. A while back (about a year ago) I changed my DSL service and since then I haven't been able to access to my router, no matter how I changed the modem settings. I tried Bridged, PPPoE, DHCP and other on Modem, it still won't allow me to access the router, it somehow took over 192.168.1.1 which should be the IP address of the router. I can still access the router if I just turn off the Modem or disconnect it.
So does anyone know what is the best way to restore it. I can call verizon, they will guide me through it , but I just don't have time to call and wait and wait.. That's my last resort.
With this set up, I am using PPPoE dialer from XP.

I am %100 sure that my Linksys IP is still 192.168.1.1, when I turn off or disconnect the Westell modem, (when it is totally out of the picture), going to 192... will take me to Linksys setup (using WiFi). Once I turn the Westell on, it somehow takes it over, and suddenly 192... takes me to Westell. I haven't figured out how it does, but I will try the link you gave me tomorrow (time to sleep now) and see if it works.

Just an FYI - I had a Belkin router hooked up and it required the PC to be wired to make changes to the router. I was using Verizon DSL (with a Westell modem) as well but that had nothing to do with it. I've since upgraded to Verizon FIOS but still have the desktop wired to the router they provided.

Hey hyedipin, I would suggest that you turn off your westel modem, and go into the Linksys. Once you are in you linksys you can go through the menus and change the DHCP server options within. Once you have gotten those changed, turn back on the westel modem and change the DHCP settings there so that it only gives out one address, and turn off the wifi. That should help you in getting it setup correctly. depending on the model of your linksys, I would also suggest a firmware update with a 3rd party software. I always suggest DD-wrt, it allows you to make some very useful tweaks to your router. If you need a walkthrough, or some more help, just ask.
Thanks Deathmonger, I never thought about changing the firmware to a 3rd party one. The DSL modem has an option that I remember changing before. Bridged or PPPoE, one allows it to be just bridged to another router so it takes over any request to router, or PPPoE simply a modem that does not do routing functions, and lets Linksys dial through PPPoE with DSL username and password.
I am going to just try to revert it back to its original settings and will set Linksys to dial using DSL account information.
