Here's the issue:
I have a slightly older HP Ultra Slim desktop set up as a back up file server, webserver and VNC server. I use this as a backup for my music files and other things. I have a user set up as "Andrew Brown" on this PC with a certain password.
I have no problem mapping the hard drive on my other XP machine (a custom built PC), I can send files over to it without a problem. On this machine, I have the same user "Andrew Brown" and the same password.
My shares have Permissions set so that only user "Andrew Brown" can access them, with full control.
My problem lies in my Vista Dell laptop. It's user is "Andrew" and it has the same password as the above computers. I can go to Start->Network on the laptop and see the PC named "Server," but when I try to access the shares, it gives me an error message. It never allows me to type in a username and password.
I think that if I could type in the password, I should be able to input "Andrew_Brown" as the user and the password on the XP machines. However, no prompt is given, it just goes straight to an error message..
simple things first...
is the laptop in the same workgroup as the "server"?

Go to Computer (Same as My Computer)
Click "Map network drive" (should be on the top bar)
Click "Connect using a different username"
Enter the username and pass you need to use
Then use the browse button to browse to the folder you want to map
Select the Drive letter you want to use and click finish.
Hope that helps, I have had the same problem as well and found that doing this works great.
Another way of wording it:
Open Windows Explorer, click on Tools then select map network drive. Enter the path to the network share (\\servername\sharename)
Click Connect using different user name. Uncheck Reconnect at logon if you don't want the connection to be permanent.
Yeah, its strange. I did it exactly the same after I restarted a couple times and it is working for one of my shares. I'm going to restart again a couple times and see if the other will work..
"Andrew Brown" is the username for the XP systems. I guess it is the same on the Vista laptop too, but I'm not really sure. I'm going to restart again and see if I can still connect.
No, that's what I thought, the username on the Vista machine is "Andrew" only, not "Andrew Brown"
I did set up an account on the XP server with "Andrew" as the username and that is what I used when I mapped the hard drive and it seemed to work.
I just don't understand why when I try to access a new share that I havent mapped that I don't get the option to input a username and password. I can easily open up an XP share without "Permissions" set for a specific user only, but if the "Permissions" are set, Vista won't let me in unless I go through and map it as a drive.
It has something to do with the way the logins work. There are automatic and cached logins and I think that is what is happening (it is using an auto or cached login that is invalid).
If the same username exists on the machine you are on and the one you are trying to connect to, it will try to use that username. So make sure that the username has the proper permissions on the server.
It always had to proper permissions is what I didn't understand. After I mapped that one, it seemed to apply that username and password to all of the shares on that computer for me. So I guess its done and working anyway.
