I have an old pc that i use for very light internet browsing over wifi and word processing. I like to keep it alive b/c it is useful for the kids to use and i dont have to worry about anything, b/c i can just wipe it and reinstall without losing much. It has win 98se on it right now, but this os is not being supported anymore and soon im going to lose a/v and firefox support for it.
I was wondering if it would be worth it to upgrade to 2000. I already have the cd, i just have been hearing people say that its not compatible with older drivers and that u cant play games on it. How much of that is true? They are also saying that the bios may not work with it. Is that true b/c the win 98 bios only knows how to boot into a dos os and 2000 isnt dos.
And most importantly, is win2000 really that much more stable than 98se. Would it give me anymore speed, or would it slow down things? The pc meets the min and recommended reqs for win2000.

I set my grandmother up with an old pc for web (350mhz K6,96MB RAM,Compaq), and I put win2k on it. It's WAY more stable than Win98SE, has much better wireless driver support, and it's DirectX 9 capable. It also seemes to run faster. If you want to play old games, install SP4 and enable "compatibility mode" (google "windows 2000 compatibility mode" to get the string that you paste into "run"). If you need to run DOS programs, use dosbox. You can also streamline win2k quite a bit, there was someone online who managed to get it running better than win9x on a p133 32mb. Just make sure that you're installing security updates and running antivirus/antispyware.
deff upgrade. win2000=rock solid stability even today many software and hardware are still compatible with 200 which is great yea man deff do the upgrade =]
I have 3 computers. One has Win2k, one has Vista and one has Win XP. The best of the three is my oldest computer, the win2k one. It never has to be restarted. It is superior to the other two and will be superior to 98.
absolutely w2k. used it at work (Compaq/HP) for years rock solid stable .
wont allow direct access to hardware though so the older games that did these tricks may not work. use dosbox etc.. w2k supports network unplug/replug. its based on NT4 thats why its stable...

Win2k on one of my old Thinkpads was rock solid...NEVER had any problems, and worked very well with a newer 802.11g pcmcia card.

I dont do much gaming on it, and all the games im using on it are xp compatible also, but i spend little time playing them anyway. I have avg and firefox on my 98 machine now, but i hear that fx3 is going to end 98 support and im sure avg will soon also.
This thing is a 333mhz p2, 160mb ram, 3gb hd. Its prolly just a little too slow to run xp and it would run out of disc space. So i thought 2000 would be perfect since it pratically is xp except a little less on the system.
I can install 2000 fine under the 3gb limit, and i use network space to store all my files, and some programs. If i get rid of all the uneeded crap in 2000, if any, then i figure i may only need about 2gb for that, so i should be fine and still have enough space for programs.
I would benefit from flash drive support, and the nt system. Sounds like a good plan.

i have an idea... try something called "tiny xp" its a cutdown version of xp with all the stuff ripped out like IE etc..... i had it running on an a30 thinkpad.....worked fine.... i also use firefox by default... the whole Tinyxp install took less than 1 gig of drive.. and uses very low memory footprint. The guys over at mp3car.com use it for their carputers...

98SE booted up and shut down much faster than win2k. Otherwise, yes it works very stable. You may have compatibility issues with some software and games, but for what you want to do, it will be just fine.
Otherwise, why not try Linux? Ubuntu will most likely work, I am not sure about wireless drivers, though.
