For the past month, I'd heard some rumors that you could get unlimited cell data for $15 a month with Telus (in Canada). Now, unlimited data in Canada is pretty much unheard of, especially at prices like this. Plus, it's no where on the Telus site.
A friend at work told me he just added it, and that it's true, but the deal was ending this week, or maybe even by the end of the January, not sure. So, I called the Telus rep, and she said that although the deal was called unlimited e-mail and messenger, it included unlimited data. I asked many questions, from difference angles, and it seems true. Plus, unlimited actually meant just that, no cap!
So, I signed up. But, before going crazy, I checked the forums and blogs, and for sure, it is true unlimited data for $15 a month.
Today, I happily used my HTC PDA phone for as much e-mail, web browsing, Google maps, and the extremely data heavy Slingbox viewing, and probably racked up close to a gig in data use. In Telus' best data plan before, this one day would have cost me $3000!!! But, now, I can do that whenever, and it's just $15 a month!!! Pretty sweet!
Just thought other Telus customers would want to know and maybe check it out.
I hope you are right but I find this very hard to believe. Did you read the small print?
My friend is paying about $100/ month for unlimited (Telus) and the small print has a few limits like no streaming and 4 or 5GB per month (something like that).
I hope you are right because I wouldn't want to see your bill at the end of the month. If your wrong, you will be Telused (new verb I created instead of another profanity)
Who woulda thunk it, Canada having some of the best and cheapest data plans??? Plus, on the Telus EVDO connection, I was getting close to 400 Kb/s which is pretty nice. When the new ROM for my HTC phone comes out, I'll have Rev A speeds and the GPS will be activated (and able to be used by software GPS programs, Google maps, etc.). There's a hacked version of that ROM out right now, but I think I'll wait for the real one just to be safe. I still really like the iPhone, but I gotta say, I'm enjoying finally being able to use my phone.
Well it looks like you struck gold. I am stuck with Fido/Rogers due to GSM, so i'm now jealous!
Andy
I hear ya. But, I think this is the start of competitive data rates in Canada which will finally bring our rates down to reasonable. This summer I'm moving to Mexico, and there's really only one national cell phone company there, and it's GSM (which I'm happy with due to selection of phones, but makes me think I'll have no great data prices, lol). Course, on the good side, my I thought I was going to have to pay out my contract (which ends next March, maybe it's a valuable contract now, lol).
Here in Canada though, the iPhone will eventually come, but they will not come if Rogers does not have reasonable data rates. So, competition, iPhone, Rogers will be there soon.
and what does this mean to those in the States? It sounds pretty sweet.
Hmm, it's hard to say, you guys already seem to have some okay competition in the cell market (way better plans that we have). Funny how that worked with cell phones, yet it was reversed with DSL and high speed Internet). Anyway, I suspect that with PDA phones becoming popular in the mainstream market, data prices will continue to drop (think about it, how many non-business customers were carrying around phones with full keyboards, running Windows Mobile, or a Blackberry/Palm, etc., a year or two ago). This market has really exploded lately.
Well, it's confirmed. I've been getting my data usage stats, and still $0.
2-Feb-2008 Data Usage (1x/EvDO) 73 Kilobytes $0.00
1-Feb-2008 Data Usage (1x/EvDO) 133532 Kilobytes $0.00
31-Jan-2008 Data Usage (1x/EvDO) 9933 Kilobytes $0.00
29-Jan-2008 Data Usage (1x/EvDO) 32 Kilobytes $0.00
Oh ya, as much as I can tell - the deal is still on!!!
Well, it seems I spoke too quickly when it comes to Rogers. This morning I was browsing through my RSS feeds and found one that said Rogers has added a $7 unlimited web browsing plan. My first thoughts were, wow, the competitive market has hit, and Rogers is matching the Bell plan.
Alas, it was not so. In fine print, at the bottom of the Rogers' advertisement, it states that it's for selective phones only, and only through WAP browsing (and as we all know, there's no good WAP pages out there). And, this excludes all PDA phones, Blackberry's, etc.
So, it seems Rogers is trying to appear like they're jumping into this competitive market, but are doing nothing of the sort. In fact, I believe this is going to backfire because it never looks good when a company tries to sneak something through somewhat deceptive means.
It's no wonder iPhone won't come to Canada when the only GSM provider is a company like this. Well, here's hoping that AT&T will be branching into Canada to provide some GSM competition (I've heard that as a rumor!).
