Historian Correlli Barnett said: "This suggests a complete lack of common sense and respect for our greatest heroes of the past."
"Churchill and Wellington were great men, but this suggests we no longer value people of great achievement.
"It's all about celebrities and popular culture. What it also tells us is what is going wrong in our school curriculums.
"Something must be completely lacking in our national education that people could be so ignorant as to think these people never actually existed.
"No doubt these other ones like Robin Hood, people mistake as being real because they have recently been featured on the TV."
It is good to see that the US isn't alone in ignorance of history...

"The poll, carried out by UKTV Gold to test the nation's general knowledge..."
The results of the poll are hardly surprising, given the audience. If it had been carried out by BBC Four, one could expect (or at least hope for) a better display of basic historical knowledge.

If it was done by Ukgold then its no better than them makinq up the results, as they don't have the sort of resources + expertise to conduct a poll!

Which puts him in a very similar same category as Queen Boudica (Boudicia).
You could also make case's for Robin Hood (again behind the mythology), Robinson Crusoe was based on a real person (BBC - History - Scottish History ) and Sherlock Holmes was believed to be real even as his adventures were published in the strand magazine (and he wasn't the only fictional detective in Baker street to receive mail!)
And as for Eleanor Rigby.. with all due respect to the Fab four how is she considered to be a historical character?
Anyone who considers this poll as in anyway factual really doesn't get history at all And it shows something about the low educational skills of the Daily Mail editors and readers that it got published by a newspaper!!!!

Everyone likes to laugh at how little the average American knows until there is a quiz in their own nation. Case in point is Canada. We complain that Americans know nothing about my fair Dominion, but in reality they know about as much as the average Canadian.

Yeah, I would take issue with quite a few of these. A lot of their fictional characters fall into a significant gray area where the exploits of real people are exageratted and mythologized. Such that the real person becomes bigger than life. In that event, you almost end up with two people: the real person upon whom the legend was based and the legendary character.
Also, this survey provides absolutely no information about the sample, how data was collected, or whether any scientific process was conducted.
I am perfectly happy to say the people around the world are just as poorly educated and clueless as the rest of us...but not based on this study.
