Time Travel

Watched Donnie Darko the other night and immediatley after got into a debate on time travel.
My theory is that if Time Travel was invented it would make it impossible for it to exist.
Naturally this caused some confusion, so I will explain:
If someone invented the Time Machine, unless it was kept secret and used only to go into the futute then what is probable is that the idea will be given to someone in the past. This could be to gain fortune/save time/good deeds/bad deeds....whatever.
But once it is in the past, someone has it.
They can patent it. They can claim credit it for it etc.
Now it's possible for the same thing to happen again and again.
The end result will be the same though: The person who invented it has grown up with a history of it allready being in existence. Why invent something that allready exists?
So the machine ceases to be as it is never created.
This is of course nonsense, but I was quite proud of my twisted logic and should sell the idea to James Cameron!
What do you think?

Exclamation

You're missing an important point though - going back in time and showing your invention to those in the past would cause a disruption to the space time continuum and both parties would cease to exist!

Unless by showing your time machine to someone in your past, you accidentally interrupted the moment your parents met, and then your mother fell in love with you, and you started to fade out of your family photos, and your Delorean was out of gas or plutonium...

Nah...

Process is wrong

No it has not worked like that so far. Most of us have no problem and that nonsense about killing a grandparent so that you would not exist is of course nonsense. We have found that the multiple universe concept comes into play.
See you last week.

Donnie Darko---great flick. But it's just that, a flick. There are tons of endless loops you can argue about how if you kill your parents would you never exists, and if you didn't exsist, how could you have killed your parents etc.... But time travel ain't gonna happen, so save yourself the headache! The only way you can argue to time travel is to reach the speed of light. But you can't go the speed of light due to the fact that as you increase in speed, your mass also increases, so if you went the speed of light (fastest possible speed) you would be infinatly large (larger than the known universe). BAH!

Anyone see the movie "Frequency"? It bypasses the whole 'faster than light' issue by transmitting HAM radio signals forward & backward in time (and so altering destiny...) - cute flick

Classic mistake in assumptions

How can anyone say with certanity what will or will not be possible. And speed of light is only one theory. What about the Quark? Read up on it if you dont know the reference. Look what has changed in 100 years ...50 and even 20 years of knowledge. Our whole perception of time and the cosmos could change overnight with a new discovery. I stoped worrying about the speed of light limitation a long time ago. People much more intelligent (watch the smart commnets Star50) than I am are questioning and learning fantastic things every day. My biggest worry is that our goverment leaders give in to specail interest groups so easily and research gives way to politics and self serving "humble" public servents.

Time travel..........who really knows. :rolling:

by the way - hnelson, harold, hey you is fine. i have admired your sense of wit and off the wall wisdom in any thread i have visited that you were part of. need to ask a question - and it may be a trade secret which is okay, but WHERE do you get all the cool smilies? i use the google search for images thing you pointed out once, but can't seem to find a really good smiley place. do you pay for 'em? seen a site where i can do that, but i am holding out.

So, if I went into the future a few months, finally got my Dell upgrade CD, and then came back, would it cease to exist?
