Windows XP networking question

This might be hard or it might be impossible

Do any of you use to win XP computers side by side at the same time?
one is XP pro the other is xp media center
The media center has the printer hooked to it, and a rack of external hard drives.

The xp pro machine is much cleaner in terms of virus' and bloat and hanging pieces of software and such... I cant figure out how to make the media center do a system restore. I hammer the F11 key and it wont do it.

Anyway I mostly work on the xp pro and then put it in the shared docs folder and then go to the other one to print.

At times the wife and I are each using one of them.

In any case is there a way to take one mouse and control both machines

Synergy

synergy is a bit of a pain to initially set up, and adds another running process to your services list, also poses a little security risk, but works as advertised... interesting to check out and is cross platform... and free ;)

otherwise set up a vnc session... or buy a nice kvm switch

Why dont you just share the printer and then u can print directly from the xp pro machine as long as the other computer is on.

I thought I was doing that when I set up the network, it was one of the reasons why I set it up. But when I tried to set up printer sharing it said that it was missing some printer software, so installed the printer software that came with the printer. It still didn't work.
It's a hp 6110 and I am not sure it is net work- able.

... in the printer properties page on the computer the printer is installed on, you can set up drivers for the computer operating systems that it will share to. make sure windows xp is selected and the proper drivers are installed. otherwise, you can try installing the driver on the xp machine, set up the proper security credentials for the printer share, and install the shared printer on your xp machine from the media center pc.

synergy and vnc wouldnt help you with sharing a printer. fun to play with either way :)

seen a demo video of synergy , guy was controling 5 or 6 pc,mac's linux boxes . just a few keystrokes to swap between each... amazing stuff...

but do as jdigitl said to share the printer.. its free lol and other ways could cost money.... a kvm wouldnt help in printer sharing anyway.......
