Help Needed Hooking up DVD Recorder

I just bought a DVD recorder for my entertainment system. I have no idea how to hook it up. Here's what I have:

Direct TV Satellite Reciever
Home Theater Stereo Receiver with tons of wires in the back
Big Screen TV
DVD player
DVD Recorder
2 VCRs (but they're not hooked up properly)
Surround Sound speakers incl Center, 2 fronts, 2 rears and a sub

Can someone point out a schematic diagram with hook up instructions? The DVD recorder came with instructions but doesn't tell me how to hook up all my components.

There couldn't be a schematic for your particular setup. Too many variables.
Look at the cables, colours and types and work it out from there.
Generally, when you sit down and work through it logically you get there in the end.

What is brand and model number of your DVD recorder, I've set up several and I'm sure I can guide you through it.

Take Care, Jim

depands on how you want it to work as well. is the stereo reciever the "center " of your setup?
i mean does it have support for multiple inputs and outputs?

basically the playing devices need to be hooked up to an input on the reciever. the recording devices hooked to an output from the reciever. and for the vcr's if you need them , they can do both......so output from reciever to input on vcr and output on vcr to input on reciever.... for the picture.. best available output from the reciever to the tv. but this is assuming that the reciever can be controlled as to which input is going to the tv and ability to redirect output to a recording device while watching from e ithe another device or direct tv.. as box said it isnt hard once you know what you want the equipment to do.. easier if you are sitting in front of it than over the net.... lol

Do you use your DVD recorder as your DVD player as well?
Apparently not, since you decided to keep your DVD player as well in your list.
Why do you need two VCRs? Do you dub VHS tapes? Do you intend to record ANYTHING at all to those VCRs? If you plan to watch anything on those VCRs pick one. Do you plan to record VHS to DVD?

Does your A/V Receiver (the one with bunch of connections on the back) has Video IN and Video OUT connections?

Is it possible for you to take pictures of the back of your DVD recorder, DVD player, TV, both VCRs and your A/V (did I miss anything) and post them one after another. I will try to draw you a nice diagram.

I used to go super geek and draw my own diagrams when I had a similar setup.

Thanks for the feedback. Here are my answers:
1. I only need one vcr. My stereo receiver has connections for 2 vcrs in the back
2. I don't need my old dvd player if I can use the dvd recorder to play
3. my dvd recorder model is: Philips DVDR3390 DVD Recorder
4. my a/v receiver does have video in and out. It has 5.1 surround and it's a sony.
5. tonight I'll take photos of the back of each component.
6. I do plan to record vhs to DVD.

I'll post info and photos tonight. I really appreciate the help!

Let's see. I was able to get the rear connections picture for your recorder.
I labeled what I believe those connections are:

With components down to 5, this should be fairly easy.

1) Direct TV Satellite Reciever
2) A/V Receiver
3) TV
4) DVD Recorder
5) 1 VCR

All speakers will be hooked up to receiver, so it is no problem, and does not need to be included in the planning.

Your first source is DirecTV. Is it HD or SD?

Second, you are in luck. Unless you want your VHS to DVD to be slightly higher quality than regular quality, you can use Coaxial Antenna from VCR to DVD Recoder.

Let's just take VCR's Coax/Antenna OUT and connect this to DVD Recorders's Coax IN. I am hoping there is a tuner or channel selector inside your DVD-R that let's you record from TV or Antenna, since they included those connections. Now, whenever you want to record from VCR, just tune to Channel 3 or 4 on your DVD-R, and hit record button.

I am assuming you will not need to record anything to your VCR anymore.
If you would like to do that, your VCR probably still has the TV-IN or RCA IN connectors available on the back. Just check the back of your DirecTV to see if it has multiple TV-OUT connectors and hook that to your VCR.

Now, remember, DVD Recorders in the market do not allow you to record high definition content directly to DVD, therefore they do not offer anything higher than S-VIDEO connection for feeding video to DVD-R.

If your DirecTV receiver is HD, you will need to use two set of cables (one to record, one to watch)

For the recording, hook your RCA/Composite OR if DirecTV has, S-Video output to your DVD-R's S-Video INPUT, and connect the audio Left and Right using the same port (Red and White). So, either Red-White-Yellow from same output to IN section which I highlighted with RED above, or S-VIDEO, WHITE, YELLOW to the same place. It looks like DVD-R shares the Audio port with both S and RCA video input.

For the watching HD on your TV, just hook your Component (RED/GREEN/BLUE) cables to your TV and tune into the selected channel on your TV to watch Satellite. I am hoping that DirecTV did not block simultaneous broadcast from both Component and Composite or Component and S-Video at the same time. (My ScientificAtlanta 8300 HD box from Time Warner allows me to use two separate outputs at the same time)

I just can't see if your DVD-R has Optical Out (to carry all 5 Channels from same port or not)

Will need to see the back of that DirecTV unit, as I am not familiar with them at all. But it looks like it is not HD ?

Correct, it is not hd. I'll either find pix online or post some tonight.

My TV is a mitsubishi vs-50805 rear projection tv. I only have one connection going to it. It goes from the receiver to the video in of my TV. A video composite cable connects it.

Do you have enough info to help?

Do you want to hear the sound of your direcTV from your home theatre, or just TV is fine? I just hooked mine up to the TV since it is a hassle to turn on everytime I want to watch something.

Wait a minute, your TV has only one Vidoe IN (Composite/RCA) Connection? No S-Video? No Component/HD input? No DVI, no HDMI? That sounds pretty difficult to believe, for 50" TV not to have any one of these ports.

--- EDIT ---
I found the specs, it says it's gut S, A/V RCA and DVI inputs (no Component):

Quote:
D-ILA Hologram Single Panel 1.22""
High Density Single Panel Device
HDCP (High Bandwidth Content Protection) for HD Content
2-Tuner Split Screen & Multi-Screen
Natural Progressive Line Doubling
3D Y/C Digital Comb Filter
Regular, Panoramic, Cinema & Full Aspect Ratios
Total Power Output of 50W
XDS Auto Clock Set
V-Chip and Channel Guard
1 DVI Digital Input
Dual RF Inputs, Split Output

4 S-Video Inputs (3 rear, 1 front)
4 AV Inputs (3 rear, 1 front)
2 Auto Sensing Component Video Inputs
1 AV Output with S-Video
1 Speaker Output Terminal for Dolby Pro Logic
1 AV Compu Link EX Input
Dimensions (HxWxD): 59.37"" x 57.13"" x 24.76""
Weight: 258 lbs.

[ NEED TV'S INPUT PANEL PIC HERE]
[ GUESSING YOUR VCR ONLY HAS ONE RCA OUTPUT AND ONE COAX OUTPUT]
[ NEED DVD-RECORDER'S REAR PANEL HERE, Some of the labels I typed above were just my guesses]

Here's the rear of the TV:

I listen to my TV through my surround sound stereo always.
GUESSING YOUR VCR ONLY HAS ONE RCA OUTPUT AND ONE COAX OUTPUT - Yes
When I said my TV has only one Video in, I meant that is all I use. Sorry for the confusion.
Thanks for all the help!
