Help, succeded in semi crashing my computer

My media center PC has been in the process of crashing, ie it's had something wrong with it since the dvd drive stopped working 2-3 years ago, for a long time.

Yesterday I was trying out new softwares, and updating some others... I was running iolo system tool virus and fire wall really i was running the whole suite pretty much after every change that I made. I also made a back up of the whole c: and d: drive with paragon harddrive manager to a external drive right. I also had Acronis true image installed but idiot me didn't use the safe zone or the system recovery tool cause I would have had to juggle some files on my hard drives to make enough space for the recovery partition. But I would have put the partition on an external hard drive.

I was more interested in playing with software.

So in the midst of this I had an autocad dwg file that I needed to look over and make an estimate on, and my autocad 2004 wouldn't work right, and for some reason acrobat wouldn't convert it so I go hunting online for a .dwg to pdf converter and find one.

I load it and nothing happens. No pdf file, then I start getting pop up's and things get slow, then I re-boot and I get a beautiful blue screen:)

I think, I'm cool I'll just reboot and system mechanic or system restore will take me back to where I was. System restore says it works but when it finishes I still have a pretty blue screen. System mechanic needs the internet, which of course I can't connect to.

I spent all of last night trying to run multi AV command line scanner. Sophos and Trend seem to run fine and even found win32:agent-uhx. Trend seems to have put it into a backup\T\ DAT file. At least thats what Avast is saying... running it from a thumb drive

For seem reason no matter how many times I update kaspersky or mcaffee on my good machine the bad machine always says that it needs to shut down to get new virus definitions.

I am almost to the point of installing a new operating system. All my important data is on my 5 external drives, there only 60% full, and even that has a bit of bloat in it

My questions

is there anyway to make the bad machine see the external drive that has the back up on it?

General principal does the operating system back up need to be on a internal drive? And if so and you only have one internal, how do you get the back up back into the machine?

I have googled this virus and can't find it, no thats not true, trend micro has it spotted and all the info on it seem so be coming from japan, any who I can't find a remover for it. Got any ideas on how to get it out?

Given what I have said do I really just need to go head and re-install the operating system? Is there a way to install xp or xp home so I can get to the external drive and then rebuild what I had with the external drive back up?

Try a search on Symantec's web site.

And, do try a scan in Safe Mode, before the virus or trojan opens.

"hit it high, hit it low, hit it with the old pea beu"

but seriously get at least spybot and adaware. as well as antivirus.but even these may not get 100%. the only true way is to reformat and then reinstall the os.... sorry but sometimes its the only answer...how much data is on it? movies mp3's etc? they are probably not infected but run the above first to clean it out a bit. and schedule scans at boot like tankman said... before the crap starts to load......

Switch to Ubuntu and stop worrying about spyware.
