I have an old computer and want to upgrade from Windows 2000 to XP. I haven't done this in awhile. I think my XP disk is the full program, and not an upgrade. So ideally I want to upgrade and not lose all my info. What do I do to make certain that happens?

I upgraded from 98se to 2000 on my old pc and did the same thing.
I started 98se to the desktop and put in the 2000 disc. Autorun came up and gave me the option of a complete wipe and reinstall, or an install over 98se where programs and settings, plus even drivers were preserved.
I imagine the xp cd will have the same option. All in all, i was impressed. All of my programs and drivers worked, going from a dos based to a nt based os and everything still worked fine. MS did a good job on the 2000 install cd.
Hopefully the xp one is just as good, i mean its just a newer version of nt.

At one point I had about a dozen SP cds. I have long since dumped them.
However, if you need a XP cd with a given SP built in, google for "n-lite" which will allow you to import a OS cd, slipstream in a service pack and many hotfixes, build in drivers for your devices, customize an unattended install with CD keys and other settings, and then burn it all back to a CD or DVD to make re-installs VERY easy.

With broadband internet becoming the norm, it doesnt make sense to keep cds of sp's that you can download from Microsoft just as quick.
Now back in the days of 56k, it would make sense to get service packs on CD.

not everyone has or can afford broadband.. here in australia you would think our "broadband" was pathetic.. its so much slower than yours... faster than a 56k though...lol

I guess im just talking about what ive seen in my area. Over the last few years, New York state has tried to get broadband out to more rural places, usually by putting in dsl. But in some very rural areas, dial up is still the only thing on the lines, and on the outskirts of dsl areas speeds are around 100-200k and the connection drops a lot. Luckily i live where cable is avalible.

Don't feel bad, Brighthouse cable (major cable broadband provider in US) and a few other ones like Cox Cable are testing out capped limits of broadband access.
Soon it may well be that the "All you can Eat" broadband will go away...

i have cable and i think that in AUS they already cap it.. however that only applies to where you are d/l from. if there is just 1 slow computer in the link then it doesnt matter how much "speed" you have its limited to how much that 1 computer lets through. i have cable, and a netgear 802.11g router on my laptop using wireless i d/l stuff wink wink.. there have been times where i have been over 600k/s most times im around 100 to 150 k/s on some d/l i am lucky to get 8k/s . it all depends on what "they" let through the servers...
dsl/adsl is sold here in speed bands as well as d/l limits.. the more you pay the more d/l you get or speed you get...
i get 20 gig peak and 40 gig off peak but loose the offpeak if i hit the 20 gig limit, on cable for $70/month. how does that compare to USA prices?

People are telling me not to upgrade to XP, but to wipe out my drive and start fresh when loading XP. I'd rather "upgrade" so I don't lose all my software and settings. What's the problem with that?

IDK, xp is pretty much built on 2000, so it shouldnt leave much if any unused files behind.
