HD TV off the air questions

I know that a group of technically oriented individuals that all own and are power users of PDAs can most likely answer this question:

I'm too cheap to convert to cable or dish tv when the analog stations shut down, so I've purchased a converter. I'm retired, so if I want to watch a movie, I hit the matinee at senior prices...

But as it seems, that's just the beginning! I have a VCR that I use frequently, which has a built-in ANALOG tuner, so I guess I'll need another converter for that too?

Or, is there a VCR/DVR device out there that will record HD/Digital off the air that you know about?

Im not 100% farmiliar with how these Digital Converter Boxes work, but if theyre anything like cable boxes, you could just hook the output of the converter box to the input of your vcr. Then hook the output of your vcr to your tv.

Since the box is already converting digital to analog, your analog vcr should still work fine for it.

The only downfall to this method would be that the vcr timer wouldnt be able to tune channels anymore, b/c channel tuning would be done on the converter box.

You can find DVD recorders and even some with a vcr combo, that record from ATSC, more commonly known as the digital spectrum.
Examples of these devices can be found here: Panasonic DMR-EZ47VK Scan 1080p DVD Recorder (Refurbished) from Overstock.com

You can get a cheap adapter for your PC that allows it to receive HDTV. They go for about $60 for a good one (ATI HDTV Wonder) to $130 for one of the best ones (pcHDTV). Then you can use MythTV to automatically record shows.
BTW, with VCD-quality video (slightly better than VHS) using only 700MB per 80 minutes, you'll find that hard drives are among the most economical (not to mention most convenient) way to store video. And with the DVD RW media (4.7GB a disc, which translates to over 8 hours of VCD quality video) becoming cheaper as Blu-Ray becomes the newest format, there's also a very cheap way to transport video. And you can also put the videos on a memory card for viewing on a portable device.

Yeah, that's what I figured, and--this is the biggest and--you can record one and watch one at the same time.

Guess I'm still looking!

Thanks, tho!

Well then you may want something like i suggested in the link, but they cost a bit of money. Thats the only way u can get a vcr or dvd tuner that records direct from digital.

If you already have a recent PC (P4 level and up should be enough, maybe even a P3 if XvMC is used), it doesn't cost much to make it an advanced DVR as well.
