POLK COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- Polk County inmates will be saying good-bye to some of their favorite foods.
The Department of Detention is attempting to slash their budget by $200,000 and still provide nutrition to the inmates. This means that certain foods will no longer be seen on the menu.
For breakfast, inmates will now receive just one slice of bread instead of their usual two. And two fresh eggs per week have been replaced with a single egg patty.
Water is the new drink of choice in the jail - coffee, tea, juice, and chocolate milk have all been cut from the menu.
And cartons of fresh milk have been replaced with non-fat powdered milk.
The jail is also replacing peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with meat sandwiches, and cornbread with crackers.
The changes will save the Polk County Sheriff's Office $195,000 annually.
"These are tough budget times, and every penny we save is a penny we don't have to ask the taxpayer for," said Polk County sheriff Grady Judd. "If inmates want to eat PB&J sandwiches and drink coffee, tea, and juice, they need to behave, quit violating the law, and stay out of the county jail."

That is getting harder... School lunches are getting more expensive (and less appealing if that is possible) I've been making lunch for my kids to take for a year now. Aside from the annoyance of having to carry it around, it is a much better lunch
