making my DVD drive work

For some time now I have had 2 computers 1 with 2 dvd drives and an external dvd drive and I could not write a DVD with any of them.

A friend came over this weekend with a new Vista laptop, stuck a DVD in it and it wrote perfectly. So I now know it's not the DVD's. The thing I did notice is that before it would write, the vista laptop had to format the DVD. What software can I put in my computers so that it will recognize that the dvd needs to be formatted and format it, when i put it in the drawer?

first... you need to provide details as to your setup.

Since you didn't, I will assume you are using XP

Download details: Image Mastering API v2.0 (IMAPIv2.0) for Windows XP (KB932716)

basically it enables XP to do the same thing it does to CDs, except to dvd media (vista has this built in)

Ok... I believe I have fixed the problems. First I tried the external drive. I hooked the external drive to the laptop and installed the software. Then I installed Winsx. The DVD dosent show up in the my computer, but if I go into winsx and then try to open the dvd it appears. Did the same drill on puter 2 and it worked. puter 3 has really 2 internal dvd drives, i installed winsx and from within the program the dvd appears. Now I just need to hook up the other dvd and all my babies should be working.
I didn't want a new puter anyway. I hate vista

if your DVD's required formating first then they must be rewritable disks.. have you tried to read write normal blanks??
