this is starting to get really annoying

ok so i have a gateway gt5238e computer running windows vista home premium, 1GB of RAM and intel core 2 duo processor, so i have the audio from my tv being routed into the line in jack on my sound card (creative audigy SE), and the line out going to an analog to digital converter then to my surround sound system, anyway i usually have a need to go into the volume control to adjust the volume for whatever apps that are running so it doesnt drown out the sound from the tv, anyway i have this problem in which just about every other time when i access any of the menus contained in the volume icon, windows explorer crashes and then restarts, i dont kno how to solve this problem so any suggestions? and no suggestions saying use windows xp or disconnect the setup.

I'm wondering if it's a probelm with the RAM. I know Vista is supposed to run on 512Mb. But, most places I've read say 2Gb or more, unless you're only doing business applications.

I know when I starting working with videos on my XP system I kept getting periodic crashes until I added another 1Gb to the 1Gb originally installed.

I concur with the memory suggestion. If you're running Vista in 1GB you are running a minimal system. I'd put 4GB in there myself.

I bought my daughter a Gateway notebook on sale at Best Buy about 3 months ago and it came STOCK with 4GB in it and Vista pre-loaded. She has had zero problems with it.

You can add 2gbs of ram for less than $30.
Newegg.com - Kingston ValueRAM 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 533 (PC2 4200) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

BTW, your pc takes pc2-4200. I have vista on a laptop and it came with 4gbs of ram. Vista runs great with 4gbs, although only 3.25 or so are seen since i chose 32bit vista.

So if you bought 2gbs, for a total of 3, you would have a pretty decent vista machine. Or you could downgrade to xp, but that may be a pain to do.

I'd suggest two 2Gb chips. If money's an issue, buy one now and the second one later on.

As long as the system isnt dual channel memory, you could.
