I recently switched jobs & my new company uses Verizon Wireless as their provider. Coming from AT&T where I also have two personal lines for the wife & kid I was surprised at the racket Verizon has going on. I do have an AT&T tilt now without service that I am using as my GPS & organizer.
I was hoping to purchase a Touch Pro form Verizon & have it ported onto my companies plan. I want the Touch Pro because I only want to carry one device instead of 2 or 3. I started doing a little bit of research & found that Verizon lock their GPS. This so that you are stuck with paying $10 for their VZ Navigator. There is a fix to supposedly unlock the GPS on the Verizon Touch Pro over at ppcgeeks.com.
Verizon locking the GPS is one thing but requiring a data plan on the Touch Pro is another whole ball of wax. I didn't find this out until I swiped my credit card for the purchase of the Touch Pro at full price ($559 +Tax). I explained to them that I wanted to buy the phone out right & just have the month to month contract. Then cancel the service once the phone is ported over to corporate plan. The woman checked the account under my corporate number & nothing could be added without prior company approval. The mandatory data plan should have been explained to me from the start. Needless to say once the phone arrives I will be dropping it off & the Verizon store.
Is there any way to get around this? I fail to understand why I can't use the phone without the data plan. Any suggestions or advice will be appreciated. I will probably just be stuck using my Tilt & the company phone.
I thought about switch my two personal lines over to Verizon but that is going to happen. I would rather my wife have to pay to call me then give Verizon one single dime.
Hmm ... not sure why they're requiring the data plan for the Touch Pro, I do know that they require data plans with the Blackberrys though.
I've been with Verizon for about 3 or 4 years now and haven't had any problem with them. They have, in fact, been very good. Every time I've had any kind of equipment problem they were very quick to resolve it the best way possible.
As for the VZ Navigator / disabled GPS - yeah, I hear ya. I'm not into GPS myself so that's not really any big deal to me but I can understand if you are where that would be a sticking point.
Offhand, though, I think all of the carriers are pretty much the same. They all have their various little "gotchas". A friend of mine is on Sprint and he says it "sucks" but for completely different reasons. All these guys are in business to make money - it just depends on which one you're dealing with as to which way they'll try to get it!
Verizon does require its smartphones to have a data plan. Why the requirement, I'm not sure. That's one of the reasons I switched to AT&T. Admittedly I never had any problems with calls or tech support from Verizon, but I preferred the idea of being able to switch out phones as needed and just drop in the SIM card.
While AT&T has not had as high a reputation in end-user satisfaction or coverage in many cities, so far it has been fine for me and been as reliable as Verizon.
Sorry jadesse...didn't mean to hijack your thread.

No, Verizon doesn't require data plans on all it's Smartphones, just the Blackberry's. The data plan on my Moto-Q is optional and can be cancelled any time.

Hm, maybe the online store handles it differently. I could NOT get an i760 or XV6800 without a dataplan, and over a year ago I saw something like "* Required for Smartphones" on their page.

Maybe so. I have noticed, too, that sometimes the terms are different online than at the stores. Geez ... why can't they just keep things simple, eh?
The terms are the same because I checked the website. You cannot buy a touch pro without a data plan on the website either. I ended up buying a HTC Touch brand new off of ebay. I was able to get the GPS working for the most part.

OK, so you are confirming my earlier suspicions, at least where the WM phones are concerned.
