I've taken advantage of the recent sale at Dell to order a Dell Studio XPS 16 to combine and replace my AMD x64 desktop and Toshiba A215 laptop. Got a 1TB Western Digital MyBook Green external drive from Newegg and backed the whole lot up.
I had no real complaints with either system, but I wanted to converge the two and get a powerful laptop. I finished migrating my wife over to a Dell, and her workplace gave me an old m500 XP laptop to fix up which I gave to my older son.
Now for the fun part of ebaying my custom desktop and laptop...and deciding if I want to keep or sell the Asus 22" lcd that I got a couple months ago or hook that up to the new Dell.:rolling:

Keep the monitor, once you have used multiple monitors you will never go back.
Plus you generally get a better image on an external monitor than you do on a laptop.

I do have a Toshiba Dynadock, which serves as a combination USB hub and docking station. I need only plug my laptop into it, and I can use an external DVI/VGA display, USB keyboards/mice , a network connection, but I think my wife has earmarked it for herself.:)

I have one of those also, but I have found that the display doesn't work that well.
There seems to be a bit of a delay, particularly with any sort of video.
I think from memory mine wouldn't show the picture from my TV program at all.
I have a Sat receiver and digital receiver connected to my system.
If you are able to spend a bit more and get the Dock from Dell that actually connects through the bottom of the laptop you will be much better off.
With that dock you can run two monitors and all of your peripherals and actually have the lid of the laptop closed. Very handy if you tend to take your Laptop with you, one click and it is all disconnected and ready to go, then just drop it back in when you come home.
I know the kind of docking stations you are talking about and they were great. My son's Dell has one, and I've got one for my old IBM Thinkpad. I don't think the XPS 16 has that capability, but then it's really not a business-oriented device. Its display is beautiful though, even for a laptop. Certain video performance issues with the Dynadock aren't surprising, since the video bandwidth would be limited by the splitting of the USB bus and its comparative speed limitation compared to the internal video bus. However, I hadn't noticed any signficant problems with mine, though Toshiba recently released newer software for the Dynadock.

Reason: clarity
I miss my old Thinkpad 390E...it just snapped so nicely into it dock, and the dock works well with my even older but still functional TP 560X. I keep it around for my old DOS games and Win 3.11 reminiscing. :)

I'm actually a native west coaster transplanted out here. I didn't intend to get a Dell but when checking comparing specs and reading reviews I was intrigued. The keyboard is great to use, screen's a beaut, and the FaceLogin tool is pretty cool and convenient when set up. Perhaps an nVidia card would have been slightly better, but I use this laptop more for business than 3D gaming.
So far I'm really enjoying my laptop, and with Ubuntu 8.10 it flies. With its native Vista it's actually pretty speedy and has so far been trouble-free. My previous AMD system was a trade for an Axim, which itself was a faster replacement for my old Alienware box.
