file conversion software?

Alright, one of the most common things I do with my X5 is to copy lots of music to CF cards and then transfer from my home PC to my work PC, or vice versa.

Problem: the home PC is running winXP and uses the Windows Media player to screw with all my music files. Consequently, it converts all files to "Windows media audio file" format, which cannot be played by my (kickass freeware) Quintessential music player here, at work.

I'm looking for software that will convert from "Windows media audio file" format to MP3.

Anyone know of anything that would help?

I could burn my music to CD at home and then bring it in and the Quintessential player would then rip and encode from the cd, but that seems like a waste of disc media.

Suggestions?

my first suggestion would be to use Winamp at work to play your music- it's a great freeware program - available at www.winamp.com

if that's not possible, Check www.download.com - they hare some good file conversion software you can use.

I'll check winamp.com
Already scoured download.com to no avail.

Thanks for the tip.......

I have Win2000 that I've started ripping with RealPlayer to MP3s. Then I can copy the MP3s where ever I want and listen.

Can't you run something other than Windows Media player to listen and rip things on your WinXP computer?

I could, but that would involve buying software or getting connected to the 'net. At the moment, neither are viable options.
Thanks though.
