L@@K! I am building an electric gokart...

I have this little buggy here: http://www.motolinx.com/bikedetail.asp?BikeKey=156

We changed the filter system on it and we screwed up and fried the piston ring so I want to try to make this thing electric.

The original engine is 7HP with an automatic clutch deal.. It went about 45mph.

I need to get an electric motor but I am not sure what kind of electri motor i should use... I need a powerful 12 or 24volt motor.
How many watts and amps n' stuff do I need?? Im not very good at electric motors.. lol..

That is a good thing.. I can put the batteries in the front. The front needs more weight. It doesn't weigh enough so the shocks bottom-up...

If you want an out of the ordinary, neat looking gokart, then, I'll tell you what we did last year for my little bro...

We added an extra sprocket on the rear wheels, so we had 2 sprockets, each on seperate ends of the shaft, and then took 2 electric chainsaws, and put one on each sprocket. Added 2 rheostats to the variable speeds lever on chainsaws. Brought everything together so a lever was the throttle control. Now, mind you, this gokart will only run for about 20 mins. (Never put the time or effort into hooking the motor up to larger batteries.)

But it was a blast making, and, if it wasn't for a little accident at a local lake that left us minus one gokart, we'd still have it...

Don't electric motors typically suffer from a lack of torque?

What no torque???!!!!

Electric motors don't suffer from a lack of torque! It's essential that the right motor is chosen, and more important that the right power supply (battery) is chosen too! But there's torque-a-plenty if the right bits are picked! Of course, a small motor and two AA batteries won't rip your arm off. (I have a 24V motor and smallish battery that will though, on my bike!)

Power source must not tail off as load is applied (too much), so that's why old style batteries are best. NiCd batteries have good power supply characteristics.

Also, bear in mind that electric motors have a linear torque curve and if the right geaing is used that means constant acceleration, which is fun for setting off........! (My leccy bike pulls wheelies!)

Have fun!

have you considered getting a few solar panels? you could tie them in with the batteries. would reduce your battery weight and provide some extra power to lengthen the time your cart could keep on cruising.

I wouldn't bother with soler panels, to much to spend for 2 little power as I see it.
