I never did install the ROM... that I had found on the Internet...
Just because I asked a question about using a ROM, doesn't mean that I do not have a valid objection to the lack of help that Dell is offering..
I just need to find some place that will fix this thing..
Is that so much to ask....?
I have been a loyal customer of Dell for 6 years..
Home computer, Laptop and (2) Axims..
If you've been loyal for 6 years, why jump at the first sign of trouble?
I think there is a possiblility that Opusp and Kark_1999 are one and the same. Two similar threads that don't make sense and both hate Dell. They could be closet Ipaq carriers.
Gotta agree here. Let the buyer beware. I am certain your life sucks right now. Contact PPCTechs. It'll cost a little bit if they can fix it. Next time buy NEW not used.
The design of the Axim is leading on a more non-repairable nature. ICs are factory installed due to size and soldered directly onto the board using micro channels and micro IC, Caps, switches, resistors etc..
I can see makye a digitizer being replaced or the user buttons, maybe a case etc.. I can't see Dell going in, tearing the thing apart just to put diagnostics on it and THEN do some repair.
As far as wanting a new unit vs a refurb... why are you mad that they will not give you a new one vs wanting them to repair your old one? Seems strange to get upset on NOT repairing yours and them offering to send a 'refurbished' unit and you WANT a new one.
As far as the warranty, that is not Dell problem. You need to pursue the ebay seller since he said the warranty was good and now you find it isn't. Why should Dell give you a warranty when then unit is a sale OUTSIDE of Dell.
Lesson here is ebay=buyer beware or more to the point "AS IS".
Your rant would be more helpful if you were alerting people to not purchase Axim's from ebay without checking when the warranty expires and to make sure they extend it before the year runs out.
ok, let's see...they offered to sell you a refurb unit for$199.00, right? How much do you think the repair will cost? Probably comprable. You mentioned you had a friend that got his PDA from HP repaired, how much did he pay for the repair? Plus how long did he wait to get it repaired? Also, if you get a refurb, wouldn't that come with some type of warranty?....just a couple of questions to get you back into reality.

Second, ebay is a risk! You didn't buy from Dell and thus they don't have an obligation. Most mfgs only cover the original purchaser of the product. Most mfgs.....do this well as does Dell.
You made a bad buy dude! If you got an axe to grind, grind it with your ebay seller.
I love my ax.....have had it for over 1 year and its a gem.
opusp, here's a couple of suggestions: Suck up the loss, buy an Axim from Dell, register on this forum with another screen name, and start over. You've really gotten off on a bad foot....Oh! and stay away from Ebay if you're not willing to deal with the hassels you've gone through....lessons learned!

Lol, what he fails to see is that Dell DOES REPAIR AXIMS, otherwise how would they have "refurbished" ones?
I also have a Sony Clie UX-50 and it has needed to go in for repair. Yes sony does repair them (For $700 they better!) but I have also been with out my Clie for a month and a half while its being repaired. Its under warrantte but if it wasnt, it would cost an arm and a leg. Granted it would still cost less to repair it rather than buy a new one and sony doesn't sell refurbished ones. But hey, we are talking about a Dell Axim! I mean don't get me wrong, its a great machine, but they are dirt cheap anyways in the PDA market. There are reasons why they are dirt cheap, granted sone of the corners cut may have been the stocking of replacment parts for consumers.
But that doesn't mean that its a bad thing. For a dirt cheap PDA, you get great service for warrantte work or replacement. You can continue to use you get another Dell Axim in the mail within 2 days and you just send the malfunctioning one back in the same box! You are never without a PDA (except for the 1 to 2 days for shiping the replacement out if the first one completly crapped out).
Like I said before I have been UX-50less for a month and a half. I have 2 PDAs (Palm os UX-50, and WM2003 Axim) because the palm can do something the Axim can't and vice versa. I rest asured that if my Axim were to crap out (knock on wood) I would be up and running again in 2 days! If I was just with my Sony, 2 months later I can get back to work (or I could go buy another pda use it while the other ones in for repair, then return the new one back to the store when the other comes back).
HEY, DELL DOES ALL THAT FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!! Now explain that again to me how that makes dell bad? So they wont repair it. Face it buddy, you might wind up paying more than a new one costs with labour and parts. Why not just pay the extra $50 and buy direct from dell and get a new Axim?
After you buy a new Axim you can put the old one in your mouth so you might think before you speak next time. Since you put the "ALERT" out, you might mislead potential dell and Axim customers about their products and services with false information. If you get right down to it, you might be guilty of slander as well since none of what you say can be directly Dells fault or responcibilty.
"SPECIAL ALERT" The Axim x5 Rocks, everyone should have one!
I've bought items ranging up to $600 and (way) more on eBay, and never had any problem, mostly electronics equipment. Including my main Axim, my Desktop, my Laptop, 2 $1000+ Digital Mini DVC Camcorders, my DVD Player, HT Equipment and X-10 stuff..........the list is quite long.
I do, however do a lot of research on who I am buying from, mostly feedback on individuals, but more and more eBayers are Internet clones of Brick & Mortar Stores, with RMAs, refunds, online credit AND Warranties!
You just gotta be careful and know as much as you can about WHAT you're buying, email the Seller with any questions and get the details worked out before sending any money. This includes any warranty transfers and License Agreements/CDs/EULAs.
Emailing questions through ebay is an excellent resource. If I get a response in a reasonable amount of time (like BEFORE the auction closes!!!)........that counts as much in their favor as good feedback. To me it's like finding a helpful sales Rep........as opposed to none.......or one who's overly pushy in his direction!!!
I LOVE eBay, it's saved me literally Thousands of dollars when compared to what I'd pay going down to Circuit City/CompU$A/Best Buy......Dell, this list is quite long, as well!

I'd be interested to know Dell's repair policy here in Australia. Under our consumer laws vendors must offer repairs at reasonable cost for a reasonable period of time after sale. Reasonable of course is subjective!
I Guess the question I would ask is WHY WOULD DELL WARRANTY YOUR AXIM IF YOU DIDN'T BUY IT FROM DELL? Thats like taking your car to be fixed at a repair shop and taking it to another shop for warranty repair on the previous repair/////all I can say is Duh!!
Even with the low back up battery issue have with my X5...I'll eep my Ax
