Some Boss Headphones.
What up, all?
I'm looking to turn my Ax into a makeshift MP3 player and my current earbuds are making me increasingly angry. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good (Most important quality), compact (second most important quality) pair of headphones/earbuds? This quandry has been peeving me for some time now, and I think this may be the place where I finally solve this damnable riddle.

I would go for a pair of Sennheiser. I got a pair in a sale years ago and haven't looked back since.

If you can afford them, the BOSE Noise Cancelling headphones rock. I keep mine plugged into my RIO RIOT with my 360 CDs loaded (total library is around 400+ but time to copy etc.)
Awesome sound and the noise cancel eliminates all that ancillary noise. Don't wear in car though, you won't hear the Fire Engine.
They would work well on the Ax too.

Well, since you said quality was the most important thing and did not mention cost Etymotic is the best ear-bud headphones you can buy. Problem is they are not cheap. They do sell a cheaper version From what I have read/heard these are amazing headphones.
I have a pair of Sony MDR-EX70SL they are a lot cheaper and sound excellent. They are bassy, and the mid range is a little weak, but for the money I think they are the best out there. Also, they are great for isolating you from your surroundings.
You might check out the HeadWize Forums if you want to do some more research.

Listen to Mike1138, he knows of what he speaks. I'm also a fan of the Headwize Forums and the Headroom Corporation.
Here are some more affordable but excellent choices:
1)Koss PortaPros (about $25 if you look for a deal)
2)Sennheiser PX100 (about $40 and they look great)
3)Sennheiser Mx-500 (about $20 - if you have to have earbuds)
4)Grado SR60 (about $60 - full size but amazing sound)
I use the PortaPros (which I love) with my Ax but I'm considering buying the Senn PX100s cause they look so much better and I'm a vain man.

If you can still find them, get a pair of "Koss The Plug" better environmental sealing than the Sony. I tweak them also with different types of ordinary earplugs from the drugstore:D

Bought a set of Radio Shack Pro35 headphones (33-01122) today for $14.99. Titanium, Inline volume control. Pretty good bang for the buck I'd say.

Check out the Bose. They have several offerings now. All are top drawer and cater to what you like. The noise cancelling phones are the greatest if you listen to music in noisy environments. Otherwise, the non noise cancelling is ideal. Ain't cheap but then quality never is. :)
Ciao,
Ron

Koss PortaPros are probably the best portable headphones on the market, and pretty cheap too. They're also wacky looking. Oh well.

Afflicted, as I am, with a constant need to upgrade all my personal tech, I just ordered the Sony MDR-D66SL Eggo Headphone from Audiocubes.com. They look quite a bit better than my beloved PortaPros too.
The Eggos have been getting rave reviews from the headphone literati at Head-Fi.org. They are a "closed" set of cans (unlike my PortaPros) so my wife won't be bothered by my music while I listen in bed. The only downside is that they are a Japanese import (i.e., not for sale in U.S.) so they end up being a pricey 90 bones. Ah well, nothing is too good for my Ax.
