Watch out!

My hubby works IT for a local pharmaceutical company. He just got word that there is a new worm on the loose - similar to the MS Blaster worm we had not that long ago.

W32.Sasser.B.Worm I think this is the one referred to. Low level but done by scan not attachment. A good Firewall is thoroughly recommended!

Links to free software to help out, if you don't have AV or firewalls.

Free Anti-virus: AVG Anti-virus

Free Firewall: Sygate Firewall

Yeah, my vote goes to AVG too. It's rock solid and updates come out frequently, with the newest version needing only very small cumulative updates. I hardly ever go online with the PC, but my kid does use Outlook Express and does a bit of internet stuff, so I keep the definitions updated about twice a week. Never been hit with a virus yet.

For my personal use, nPOPw on the PPC means I never download anything unless I specifically mark an email for download. Since no virus yet reported in the wild is aimed at the PPC, and my email previews are less than 2KB each, there is zero risk. I delete all such garbage from the server, never having wasted the bandwidth on downloading it. My wife uses nPOP on her notebook PC, to pre-screen before opening Outlook Express and grabbing the real mail. Her spam and viral attachments likewise never make it off the mail server. Still, she does AVG updates at least every week, just in case something sneaks past her regimen.

Please note that this virus is not spread by email or email attachments, rather via vunerable port scans. The AV will not help in these circumstances, it's the Firewall that keeps it out.

i got hit with something nasty last night...W32.gaobot. it creates a process called microsoft.exe and sucks up system resources, blocks symantec.com (liveupdate inoperative), and disables your AV software.

finally clear of it now....it spewed out 70-some copies of itself in different locations. hopefully NAV didn't miss anything.

In the link there is a standalone application for removing it if you become infected, so it might not be a bad idea to pick up a copy of it while this is a threat. Here's the link:
Removal Tool link near bottem of page read first though
