Upgrading laptop?

Well, I am still looking at getting a new laptop. But, thought I would entertain the idea up doing a little upgrading and get another year out of my current one.

Don't need any more memory. Though I could use a larger HD and a faster proc. Does anyone know of a site that can tell you what proc your computer could take? I know mine would have to be a P4 with a 400 fsb, but nothing beyond that. I don't want to go off on my own buying a new one only to find out it won't run on my mobo. Tried getting the info from Dell, but the first reply I got was a generic email with some links. None of which helped.

I believe it is a socket 478, but not positive. Would there be a way to find out from getting a number off the proc? My laptop is out of warranty, so it wouldn't do any harm to open it up.

I would check it out first.
For example in my laptop the CPU is soldered to the mobo. :-(

So I upgraded everything else and now I have a celeron 466 with 256Mb Ram, 30Gb HD and a DVD/CD-R.
I'm not even sure it makes sense anymore. But ehi, it runs WinXP perfectly.
