Define fat. They market and sell a product. For that they are entitled to make a profit. Given that model, it's not so much how much does the artist gets that's important, it's how much profit does a CD generates. I'd be willing to bet that it's a whole lot less than what you think, or than what the artist gets.

Well, in your own opinion, should p2p music downloading be legal. Why/Why not?
If it was made completly illegal, would you do it?

In Holland it is legal, the downloading via p2p.
But not making extra copies for friends, or selling burned copies.
Peace,
Henk.

For the record, it is also legal in Canada. For now. It is being appealed by RIAA but until a higher court decides, it is legal for P2P.
No lawsuits coming my way, in any case. I don't have time to download, less burn, CD's.

When I was a kid no one ever said anything about recording a song onto a cassette from the radio.

That argument is always made, and is a strwman.
First, the quality of a cassette recording of over-the-air broadcast sucks.
Second, taping an album to cassette, even copying a CD, is not an efficient way of distributing copies. It is legal to make a duplicate of a CD. It's the making available CD quality tracks for everybody to copy that is illegal.
It's interesting to note that in Canada, it's legal to download, but not to make available to upload.

Fat in my context, means the way they don't really do much expect package and distribute someone else's product.
If you wrote a piece of software, would you settle for 11% of all the profit it made??? Think, thats alittle over a dollar US for one cd!!!
If you read the links i posted, you will see exactly how much the labels make off of each CD, and how much profit there is.

^^If I wrote a piece of software, I'd have no way of distributing it to the public and making any money at all, so I'd recognize that someone would have to do a LOT of work for me, not to mention technical support and the myriad other issues that come up. And if I didn't like 11%, I'd try another software distributor. Welcome to capitalism.

a) you would provide the tech support
b) 11% sucks, but because of people like you supporting the big labels, the little (more fair) labels can't even get off the ground.
c) Downloading music is like making your "software" a "trialware app" People can try it, then buy it off of you. They may crack it, but such is the way of life.
Stop doing what u r told is right and think for a minute.

Stop trying to rebel against everything simply because it is currently "cool" to do (bush bashing, what you are doing, etc.) But whatever, let's just agree to disagree, because this is turning into a flame war and neither of us will convince the other. Deal?

Sounds good man, I was just trying to proove a point. If i respect an artist, and they are on a label that doesn't jip them, i buy the cd everytyme. I don't like the way the labels throw their weight around, thats all. I am sure they will topple soon enough. The RIAA can't sue everyone, and even if they could, people would still do it.
Anyway, i accept your proposal.
Peace
~Reese
