What could be wrong?

I just got a laptop for a steal on eBay (P3 1GHz/256MB/20GB/15 inch/CD burner). $288. The only problem is, the laptop won't accept AC power (I haven't received it yet, this is what the listing said). I'm wondering what I should look at as possible culprits. I've already done some research and it looks like I should check the DC jack (no brainer) and the DC-DC converter board. Anything else I should check? And anything in particular I should look for in what I already plan on checking? Thanks all for your help!

That would be my guess too... Problem with the internal power supply.

Battery. I've seen notebooks not power up on AC when there is no battery, or if the battery is completely dead.

The battery is good. It can run the laptop. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Howard, what do you think would be a ballpark figure for repair cost? Do you think someone with some experience taking apart laptops could fix it themselves? TIA.

I used to do PC repair eons ago and I remember that laptops were a PITA. But yeah, should be doable. I also remember that the prices for the individual components were usually pretty extortionate.

Of course, it might just be something you can fix your self, you never know, like the dc adapter becoming unattached to the motherboard, and all you have to do is re-attatch it. I would take a look inside before you bring it somewhere that will charge you just to look at it...or even if they dont

I'm really hoping that's all there is to it. But as long as it's under $100 to fix, I'll be happy.
