Just so you know, ad aware doesnt find the same stuff as those other two, and spybot s&d automatically stops the dl of spyware, which i like so i use both

well, after a few more tests, this is what i have concluded,
you should run,
Adaware and Spybot Search and Destroy
if you can, also run Xoftspy (it is not free but it works very good)
Spysweeper really isnt that good and takes way to long to scan
(about double what the others take, i did it again and spysweeper took a little under an hour :crooked:)
Xoftspy, Search and Destroy, and adaware mostly catch everything but there are some that one dosent catch and the other does catch
in order of how good they are i say,
1) Xoftspy
2) Search and Destroy
3) Adaware
but like i said, you really should run them all once and awhile, (or at least adaware and Search and Destroy)

I do exactly what grentz says, even though i dont need to run S&D, i do just in case, even though it blocks all dl's anyway. I dont use any pay programs, so i dont use xoftspy, but i run ad-aware and update as much as possible

EDIT: ah yes and i almost forgot, in ad-aware, i run custom scans, and scan everything, even the stuff it normally leaves out, so my scans usually take a while. And i just got a new reference file today, so if you use it i would check for updates

The problem is that all this junk is reactionary. You have to wait for someone to find the spyware and create a profile in their program for it. Then you have to download it. Then you have to actually get infected. Then you have to run the anti-spyware program.
You'd be doing a lot better if you a, didn't habitually log on as local administrator, and b, fixed your IE security settings.
The first one (not logging on as an administrator) is harder to implement if you're already using a profile as one. You'll lose access to your current desktop, my documents, etc. But it's real easy to get going. Get a command prompt and type "net user user /add" and you get user account called "user" with a blank password. You should use that one instead. If you have to install something, log off, log on as an admin, install it, and log off.
The second one is a lot easier. You can change the settings yourself, but I made a script that does it too. Read up on what the script does - a lot of people have gotten comfortable with their backdoors. This script also removes BHOs and clears the run list, which a lot of spyware rely on. But it's very effective at preventing infestation too. http://www.jordanmills.com/scripts.asp

by the way, i did my test twice in adaware, once with a smart scan and once with a total system scan
it still left out some stuff so i think for sure you should run both,
i tried it on another pc and adaware got 30 objects ( i usual run adaware about 1 time a week on this machine and untill now thats all i did)
then, i tried search and destroy, i took off another 280 OBJECTS WOW!!!!
but then, search and destroy missed some on my machine that adaware picked up, so you really have to use both:) ;)

BTW, all of your feedback has been great. Quick question...
I also run S&D and Adaware and was wondering why new spyware and ad programs just pop up. I haven't downloaded any freeware in a long time and am not running programs like Kazaa. If I've done a scan and don't do any of the prior, how does spyware and ad programs get loaded into my computer. Also, I do run a firewall.

Thanks.
it comes from just going to webpages, many just install while you are surfing the web, even on good known sites some come through
(search and destroy alerts you to some and i have gotten the alert on known sites like pc world )
