My default answer would be that Newton was knighted with the "Sword of State".
Certainly that is the case now, and has been since George IV (who appeared some 60 years after Newton was knighted at Trinity.) The George IV sword, also known as the "Sword of Offering", is widely considered to be the most beautiful and valuable sword in the world. It forms part of the Crown Jewels. Google for it.
I'll be at Trinity College in March; if you still haven't found out by then, I'll ask the History Fellows in the SCR - if nothing else, it should make for an interesting conversation during lunch.
