What's the "best" or cheapest legal music download site?

I've seen WalMart at $.88 per song. Anything better? More selection?

My kid is frustrated at the selection.

Thanks

I'm not convinced of the legality of this either way, so make your own informed decision before using :)

How does Napster charge? By the song, or monthly?

I also like itunes. The price is .99 for songs and 9.99 for most cds. Not the cheapest, but they have a good selection, and hey, i have an ipod :p

As much as I love iTunes - I don't like the fact that the downloads are only 128Kb/s. It'd be nice to be able to get higher bitrates.

Of course it's all moot for me, the iTunes store is not available in Canada yet :)

I dont know, 128kb/s AAC isnt bad, actually its pretty good. I cant tell the difference between it and 196mp3...and thats as high as i ever get. With only a 15gb ipod, and an ever growing library (currently around 2500 songs), i need to get all the space i can, while maintaining a sembalance of quality.

I'm not knocking 128Kb/s AAC. I just choose to rip everything to 160Kb/s AAC and if downloading music it's not like I can go and re-rip it again later. So if I'm stuck with a particular format I'd rather have 160Kb/s than 128Kb/s. No biggie, just a preference. :)

Heres how it goes:
.99 per song

9.99 per month to subscribe to stream or download songs to play ONLY ON 3 PCs (you cant burn to a cd or put them on your handheld or mp3 player) (very cool since they act like music files on your pc so that you dont have to stream or be on the internet all the time :approve: )

14.99 per month for napster to go...same as 9.99 except you can transfer the tracks to your wmp10 device (right now the Axim x50v and some other mp3 players (not all support it))

hope this helps :approve:

I like Allofmp3.com at a penny per megabyte. That is almost a gigabyte of music for ten dollars, which is an exceptional deal. An average album is about 50 to 60 cents.
