I'm a longtime software engineer (mainly *nix-based, some windows, perl/basic/C/C++/assembler...) and having recently acquired an x50v I've decided I'd like to tinker with some programming.

What free dev tools are available? (Any programming language will do, windows or linux based preferably).

Are there any resources about pocketpc programming for pocketpc newbies?

Basically, how do I get started writing software for my Axim?

Since you mentioned C/C++, just download Microsoft's eMbedded Visual C++ 4.0. It is free to download from Microsoft's website (yes, that's right, a Microsoft IDE is actually free :p). This will allow you to develop apps for Windows Mobile 2003 devices.

If you want your apps to work on BOTH PocketPC2002 and WindowsMobile2003 devices, download eVC 3.0 instead of 4.0.

If you want to go with VB.NET or C# (which it sounds like you won't with your background), then you'll need to purchase Visual Studio .NET 2003 or higher.

Oh, and with any of these development environments, be sure to download the SDK from Microsoft's site as well.
