EDIT: My old, old man was a miner from Barnsley - unfortunately my father never got to know him (minor? safety issue), never forget your roots!

As a uni. vacation job, I laboured in the steel works (Scunthorpe - Longsight) - It was like the moon - drilling out bricks in hot coke ovens - best job ever.
I was the envy of all the guys - every other day 'cow pie' for snap! :)
Cheers

Tha' nose we cant 'elp it, me duck.
Something about mad dogs and English men.
FYI a Stint is your working day or shift & Snap is a meal carried into work.
The real local stuff is even more confusing - depending on where you live in the UK the same thing is called a cob, a bap, a breadcake, a barmcake, a ...
(They are all small hemispherical bread rolls)
English is such a rich language. :)
(Hardonreset - Amongst others I work with the steel industry - whats left of it - and visit Scunny at least once a year, Port Talbot is an old friend, etc. Good on you for surviving the job, hard work and special men).

You know, I have this dreadful feeling that my number is coming up soon.
I’ve chanced the luck of ‘the Irish’!
I keep having this memory of Hartlepool, Seaton Carew…….., I’d look out my hotel room and watch men collecting ‘sea coal’ on a winter’s morning.
I worked for/had a company with employees in Hartlepool.
Our guys worked in portacabins.
We employed a maniac, Steve, who’d been with the Antarctic Research a little bit too long!
We were at the time into antenna development – the only place he said he could work was the Shetlands – his explanation was that there was minimal EM interference.
We didn’t complain – it gave us the excuse to get a light plane.
I still see those guys picking up coal.
I think I’m losing it!
Cheers

Australian mate!
My hubby does English, Dutch, Hungarian and German. I know important words in Dutch and Hungarian - like swearing and the commands for the dog .
