Apart from voltage surges, heat is one of the biggest killers of CPU's. The hotter the CPU the more likely it is to fail. The longer a CPU is hot the more likely it is to fail. If you keep your CPU running 24/7 then naturally you bring the dreaded date of failure nearer.

Most importantly, if you switch your PC and peripherals off when you are not using them you WILL conserve energy.

And finally, always remember that 86.4% of statistics are made up.
i leave it on all the time, i have intalled some beast CPU fans and case fans

Mine is on 24/7. I do put it in sleeep mode. If leaving my computer on is a waste of engery so what! I'm paying the bill. BTW engery is wasted every night lighting up empty buildings, autobahns and empty streets.:rolling:
