I agree with this having gone there 18 years ago - it is something that will live with me for the rest of my life - especially as my wifes grandparents were both exterminated there!.
I didn't agree with the reasons or way we went into Iraq - BUT - our troops and the american ones have my full support ( I have nephews there ) whilst they are there - they have a hard job to do and are doing there best to do it!
The war was badly managed from the ofset - punching through to areas without securing you flank, etc.
The complaints about america in WWII are not in my views justified - I'd like to think that america was planning to come into the war eventually (just as they did!)
BUT I must admit that I do get very p**sed off with the rantings about the amount of american lives lost - yes they lost more men out of all the allies but if you work thie number of men who died for each nationality against that nations population then they average out about the same.
I feel that just pointing out numbers is demeaning to the lives of the allies that died delaying the nazi's enabling the american nation to build up its armoury so that it was ready to join the war.
please don't take this wrong I am extremely grateful that america joined in WWII and I realise that they were supplying us weapons before they joined in with manpower - this is why I realise that it was obvious that they would join in at some point - you only have to look at the weapons build up they were doing before they joined - pearl harbour just brought them into it slightly earlier than they would have done.
Remember - one life lost is as terrible a situation as one million lifes lost - anyone who doesn't accept this fact is demeaning the lives of that one individual.
And arguing about those lives lost during war time is disrespectful of the brave soldiers that gave their lives for their nation.
We can debate the rights and wrongs of this war BUT don't start generalising about nations - complain about the leaders of those nations and their decisions but praise all our brave soldiers who are doing their jobs - they need the support of us all.
If the thread creator is happy his country is leaving then thats his viewpoint and whatever you say to him he's made it clear he's not going to change it.
My opinion is that once you start something you believe is justified then you have to finish it whatever the cost if it. And whatever you or I may thing of it Bush and Blair obviously believe they were correct in doing what they did - its now up to those of us in their countries to support them to this end.
