The difference between the walkman and the iPod is that Walkman actually allows you play your tapes in other cassette players. The iPod and other variants of this type (i.e. online music that restricts play to a proprietary device) is by far the most rediculous thing to ever hit the market. I can't believe people are duped into purchasing this piece of crap. Don't show them that you ACCEPT DRM. If you go to the store to buy a single.. do you not have the ability to play the CD on any CD player? yes? Then why would you deny yourself the same freedom buy purchasing an iPod and using the iTunes service that only allows you to play the music you downloaded on their device? I just don't get it.
Errmm... As much as I hate to burst your "iPod hate bubble" you don't HAVE to purchase music from iTunes. :) If you go to the store and buy a CD Single you can play that on your iPod (once you rip it) too. There are of course many ways to circumvent the DRM on iTunes too. It's a choice. You can choose to accept it and use it, or choose to not accept it and not use it. It makes no difference to the functionality of the player.

circumvention is not legal. Well, here I thought you could only play iTunes songs on the damn thing. Thanks for setting me straight; and that , to me, makes the product more realistic. However, then, I don't see any need for iTunes. Seriously, if you could put the mp3 onto the iPod then why buy from iTunes where you can't get the mp3 off and play it on other devices?
* iTunes purchased music files are AAC (MPEG-4 standard) files with Apples proprietary DRM (Fairplay) over the top.
* Music ripped into iTunes from your CD can be AAC (without Fairplay) or MP3.
* The iPod will play AAC or MP3 (or other formats).
In my mind the bigger crime of iTunes Music Store is not the DRM (they don't limit how many times you can play it, but they do limit how many times you can burn it) but the fact that you can ONLY download music in 128Kb/s AAC format. What if I want 160Kb/s AAC? Or 192Kb/s? No choice. That's the bigger deal to me and that's why I don't buy music from iTunes. I'd rather buy the CD or get it from other sources.
iTunes is a fantastic music manager. Far and away better than WMP in that regard (IMHO). Intelligent playlists, great ripping performance etc. Awesome product.
The iPod likes to sync with iTunes (as opposed to WMP for example) but it does not HAVE to sync with iTunes. However, unless you're a geek your iPod life includes iTunes. Of course all your existing MP3s can be dropped into iTunes. And iTunes can then actually auto-level them for you too.

You've single handedly changed my opinion of the iPod and iTunes service in record time..lol. I have to agree with you on the bit rate. If they offered a selection of rates, that would be killer! I had so many misconceptions of the product. I must now smack myself for not researching further and smack my friend for feeding me part of that misinformation.. ;)
