I think it's very important especially in today's age. I mean seriously, can you imagine not getting a job because your resume has a typo!!!? It's possible. People are sticklers for that kind of thing. Luckily, for me, I'm halfway decent.
I think it is important. It generally shows education level, or lack of proper education. I don't mind the mistakes once in a while, although they do present themselves to me as soon as I read them. Typos also happen to the best. What really bothers me is when people intentionally butcher the language. U know who U are. I don't think there is really a very good reason for doing this. Things like LMAO and IMO are alright because they are accepted in forums like this.
I do not fancy abbreviations. Me, for instance, I do not exactly know what LMAO stands for. I know where to look it up, though. But recently I was talking to someone from HP (!) about PDAs and he was confused. I cannot recall the full context, but he thought, I was talking about Public Display of Affection.
a fwwe mispepllings isnt too bad, but when you get to bad like aximbigfan where it looks like a different language it is important. it is also important in everyday life, i vote HELL YES
Spelling and grammer tell me how much one cares about what they're saying (writing). Yes, it can indicate a weak mastery of the language, but I think it's usually pretty easy to tell the difference.
The better one speaks the the more they want to be heard. Those who don't care how it comes out are only interested in talking.

My new favorite quote (attrributed to Mark Twain, although i haven't been able to confirm the attribution or the wording):
"Those who don't read the newspaper are uninformed.
Those who do read the newspaper are missinformed."
I try to use grammar correctly but mine isn't perfect. Since the messages here are generally informal, as informal as talking, I don't tend to use exact grammar. This is a casual place. I find grammar to be important when conveying a detailed, specific idea but grammar problems seldom get in the way. I mean, if one's car breaks down one will provide an exact location to AAA, but most likely won't say, "hello, with whom am I speaking? Ah, yes, would you please send a tow truck to...." - rather it's "I broke down at the corner of Main and Walnut- can you guys help out?"
