install skyscape apps WITHOUT smart update

i love skyscape apps, but i hate all the crap that gets installed on my pc ("smart update" and other potential spyware). here's how to get just the skyscape ppc app installed:

1. download & install the skyscape setup exe onto your pc
2. make a copy of the skyscape installation directory and rename the copied directory (it does not matter what you name it)
3. reboot
4. uninstall the skyscape app you just installed. that should get rid of smart update. if not, click start -> programs -> smart update -> uninstall. or use add/remove programs to get rid of smart update
5. find the "extra" skyscape directory that you copied & renamed earlier. dig down the directory tree to the "install" subfolder. you will find files named setupData.cab and setupReaderPOC.arm.cab. open another instance of windows explorer and copy these files to "mobile device" and sync
6. on your pda, open "file explorer" and find the files you copied in step #5. tap them to install, and you're done!

It would be better to use a program like cabinstl which lets you install in a directory of your choice once you get the .cab files in the pda, by indtalling from the explorer would put them in the main memory (of which we never have enough). Thanks for the tip though, skyscape is invasive and something should be done about it.

Good luck with Skyscape. I will never ever use their products for that reason...they install too much garbage and then make it impossible to uninstall. Go with a different company.

Do spyware removal programs remove the harmful software?

Is it a matter of slowing down the PDA because my processor is already pretty slow or does it just junk up your PC?

Is there any benefit to having the the update feature? They make it sound like a nice feature but as with everything can be misleading.
