ROM modification

I'm looking for a method of "extracting" the PPC file system structure from .ROM files and modifying some files inside. For example, freeing up ROM from unnecessary MS programs and including other ones that will seat in ROM, freeing storage/program memory.
I think it is legal (for if I can delete/add new files on my PPC, I guess I am able to modify the ones in ROM as well), but help in this question is appreciated, too.
But the main question is: have anybody tried this, or likes to contribute?

Hex editor?

Personally I wouldn't touch this with a ten foot pole... too much trouble for a bit of extra memory, because if you mess it up your Axim won't boot and you'll need to send it for service.

But, as someone said, if I won't touch the first 256K, then I'll always be able to get everything back.

Keep in mind that if you did successfully modify your ROM, that it would be a true pain in the butt to install any future ROM updates/patches that Dell releases.

just get a bigger sd/cf card, and don't worry about the tiny amount of extra memory with the modded rom. its just not worth it

A while ago there was a post on how to change the boot up screen by haxoring the rom with a hex editor.. changing the bitmap for another one.
but i couldn't find a nice picture so I didn't try it :)

also, replacing the files in rom is quite difficult if you want them to execute from the rom. If you still want to find out more, try searching XDA forums, as that seems to be where most of the progress has been. IMO still though, its not worth the hassle
