Looks Like Dell Screwed Me Out of $100

I just got my Dell Axim X50V but did not open it. Noticed that my American Express credit card was not credited with a $100 AMEX Membership Rewards certificate I redeemed.

I ordered the unit on 2/24/05 and told the sales rep that I wanted the Axim X50V for $424 (current web price that day) plus screen protectors for a total of $438. I then informed the sales rep that I had the $100 certificate. He said OK and requested the certificate number. He then said that the total was $438 and I asked what about the $100 discount. He said that the $100 would show up on my American Express as a $100 credit.

He then suggested that I pay using my Dell Preferred Account rather than my AMEX. He indicated that this would be no problem.

Received the unit today (3/3/05) and noticed that my AMEX was not credited $100 plus. Called up Dell and found that the $100 was applied and subtracted from the order after they accounted for the docking cradle (supposed to be included), etc. None of this was mentioned by the original sales rep. I event confirmed the $100 AMEX credit again.

I am now awaiting a phone call from another sales rep and I also requested an email regarding all this. I was tempted to send unit back but then I realized that I would also lose the $100 certificate since it was already redeemed . Plus, I was all ready to use the Axim. Been reading posts on this board all week.

I also found out from AMEX that Dell was suppose to charge the remainder of the amount after certificate to the AMEX card (probably an agreement between Dell and AMEX).

Hopefully the Dell rep that I am waiting on will pull through or someone else from Dell reads my post. Meanwhile, a Axim X50V sits in a box by my front door.

I should have also mentioned that Dell said that the certificate could not be used with the web price but I was only informed this after unit was billed and shipped. If I was told this up front, then I would have not completed the deal at that time. If I was told about the policy when I called four weeks earlier about it (to see if certificate could be used), then I would not have gotten the certificate and could have used my AMEX points elsewhere.

BTW, the new sales rep dealing with me did not call back or send an email.

I'm sorry you had that experience! I had something similar when I purchased my Inspiron notebook in September. The $100 mail-in rebate hadn't arrived (after a reasonable period of time) so I got on their website where one can check status of rebates. It wasn't even there, in any stage of processing! So, I provided all the info from the packing slip, and the rep said, "hmmm, not sure why it wasn't there, it ought to be!"
Makes me wonder...how much money do you think Dell makes off of people who forget about their rebate....
I eventually rec'd my check, but the whole incident lowered Dell's stock in my eyes...
Hope this works out for you.

Well, I called back and got another rep. Explained the problem again and got an offer for $50 credited to my Dell Preferred Account. Not $100 but my other option is to send the unit back and fight to get the $100 certificate back which would really mean a $100 in store credit likely to be applied to new system purchases meaning I would have to spend another $500 or more.

I still think I got an OK deal and can go home and open up the box and try out my Axim X50V. I may need to take it with me to a hotel though 'cause I now blew my "gadget" budget (guess I could argue that the hotel isn't in the budget either :)).
