Sony has been ordered by a U.S. court to pay about $90 million in damages and to halt game console sales in the United States in a patent infringement case against Immersion, the company's game unit said Monday.
Sony Computer Entertainment said it disagreed with the decision by a federal district court in California and would appeal to a higher court.
SCE said it will continue U.S. sales as the suspension order--which covers PlayStation and PlayStation 2 consoles, two game controllers and 47 software titles--will not go into effect before the appeal and because Sony will be paying compulsory license fees to Immersion, an SCE spokeswoman said.
Immersion, a San Jose, Calif.-based developer of tactile feedback technology, claimed Sony Computer Entertainment infringed on its technologies that make a game controller vibrate in sync with actions in games, the Japanese game maker said.
I wonder what that's going to do to their share price?? :rolling: No doubt they'll cough up a bunch of cash and things will all be ok.

The halt sales order seems really extreme. Sony must be unwilling to admit fault in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. This could end up costing them a LOT of money over a long period of time. In the mid-80's Texas Instruments won patent infringement cases against every Japanese and Korean semiconductor maker - they have been receiving royalty / licensing fees from all of them ever since. BIG ...
It's about time that Sony got smacked in the face.
The funny thing is, they're hardware is still subpar in terms of construction value, in my humble opinion they should have just paid Immersion to get the REAL technology and maybe to help develop a few other things, because the quality of their hardware is atrocious.
I'm glad that their finally going to pay for something at least. Hopefully.

I don't think I've had any problems with any SONY products. Ever.. I'm not a SONY fan boy by any stretch of the imagination (I'm not buying a PSP) but I just don't remember having any SONY product fail. I'm sure it happens of course. Maybe I've just been lucky.

I've got a Sony Walkman from the Mid-90's and it has never failed. I've also got a Sony Turntable from the early 80's which I use to this day because it has always worked amazingly. Those are the only Sony products I have owned, but they show exceptional quality.
I like Sony, I have nothing against them. There propeiatary (excuse my spelling)standerds I don't like. If I had a choice between buying a PDA or Stereo Receiver, and they both had similar features but the Sony was 50 bucks more, I'd buy the Sony just because then I know i'm getting quality. I like Sharp as well, they make a nice Zaurus.
Aswell I've never owned a PS(1 or 2), but I just remembered I've had a Sony Alarm Clock for the past few months and it works great as well, and I Imagine I'll be using it in College.

Just about everyone I know who owns a PS2 has had to replace it multiple times for a variety of failures, I personally have had 2 or 3 Sony Stereo's that failed (I'd bought lifetime service from Stereo Advantage so I didn't get soaked). There was a time once when Sony made great hardware as J-roc points out...

But that time is gone, now they build stuff to last just long enough to keep people paying exorbitant amounts of money to replace their toys. Ultimately this is probably an opinion, as I don't really have any way of backing it up except with personal experience and my stint doing technical support for them. But I can't ignore that I've never had any of my Phillips or Panasonic hardware fail on me, and I've had Sony fail reliably.
Ironically, my Stereo from '85 is the only Sony I have that's never failed. So there it is.

The Stereo that came with with the Turntable, It was sold --- but I'm sure somebody is still enjoying that stereo to this day!
My receiver, just in my room for LP's is a "Queon", Never heard of it either, got it at a garage sale and It works to this day as well. It is obviously from the 70's, judging from out puts and the fact it is wood paneled, very kitshy so I like it.
My Panasonic TV, is from the 80's. It has an awesome picture, Wood Paneled and performs just as good as the day it was bought. Well, it was fixed once a while back from being hit by lighting.
We have a Pioneer receiver from, 1984 I beileive. A VSX-2000. Either way it has been hit by lightning 2 or 3 and fixed afterwards and performs to this day as well.
I suppose they just don't make them like they used to, if what is said about newer electronics I plan to never upgrade my systems. Have an Computer Controlled Akai that is from the 80's, Old enough to still say "Made in Japan". As In "Made with Quality". The Sinclair Amp, The Telefunken (German) Receiver all still work, except the Telefunken needs to be re-strung.
Too bad I was born in 89, It would seem I missed out on all the decent Electronics.

Yeah, but you also missed hideously poofy hair, and incredibly bad popular music... oh wait...

I think you need to watch some "I Love the 80's" On VH1. The 80's Rocked for Music. As for the hair, well some of it was alright.
Don't be dissing the 80's. That's all I can say. Besides, the 90's was basicly the 80's except with N'Sync instead of Duran Duran, more R&B and smaller Cell Phones.
Bah, the 80's had good music, as did the 90's... but the majority of it was craptacular. Or perhaps I should step back and stop being judgemental... it might be better if I said that I didn't like the majority of it.
That's a habit I'm trying to break, saying that cause I don't like something it's crap... not a good habit to have. ANYwho, the majority of 80's and 90's music was not to my liking. I'll take 70's (and maybe a little 60's) rock 'n' roll any day.
Aerosmith, Led Zepplin, and Lynard Skynard will live forever in my .mp3 list.
Wow, we're off topic here.
