axim x30 vs x50...need advice

Hi everybody ! Brand, spanking new to the forum (and pda/ppcland). Totally excited to find this section of the forum, gonna try to limit the questions to important stuff. First off, am getting ready to purchase a ppc and am trying to decide between the X30 high-end and the X50 mid. Don't know which to get. Anybody got any insight for a first-time user/purchaser? I also wanna use the thing for wireless and music.

Also, since this is a medical forum, which programs are gonna be essential for a med student? Think budget. Most sites say that their medical apps are pda and ppc compatible. In reality, how true have you found this to be? Thanks :)

Hello

Well, the X50 has the advantage of being VGA. I would definitely recommend having bluetooth and wifi. Other than the VGA, the X50 has little to offer in addition to the X30's features.

As far as software goes, you will need a drug reference, there are several available. You can use the free epocrates which is fine for most people. A good medical calculator is Archimedes, also free.

regards,
Leo

Only the X50V has VGA (thats what the V is for). The X50 Doesn't have VGA

I went for the x50 because of the extra memory (128 rom vs 64) and the compact flash slot (in addition to the SD slot both have). I figured with the potentially large sizes of some programs, and wanting to put music, etc, on there, that I wanted more space and more options for space.

Hey, thanks for the advice. I just purchased an x30high on ebay (came w/ an extended warranty- thru 2007). Plus, i figured i would get it quicker than if I went thru dell. Will definitely get an extra memory card for it. And i'll check out those programs and links. Thanks again! Can't wait till it arrives.

The X30 high should be able to do everything you said you needed. I am a pharmacy student and was trying to decide between the X30 and the X50v a few months ago. I decided on the X50 but I have a lot of friends (Pharmacy and Medical Students) that have the X30High. I'd check with your school to find out if they have student pricing on any of the medical software products. There is a free Epocrates version for drug reference, but the free version cannot go on a card and can eat up a lot of memory. Our school offers free access to MobileMicromedix which I like better than Epocrates. I also was able to get in on a group discount for the Lexicomp Suite (15 complete databases including, Grifith's 5 minute consult, Stedman's Dictionary, MedAbbreviations, and a lot of drug information databases)
