Arrow Norton AntiSpyware beta available

https://www-secure.symantec.com/public_beta/index.html

Note this is the entire Norton Internet Security Suite 2005 Spyware Edition. Symantec does not plan to release a standalone version. Upgrade pricing for current owners not available yet, but retail is expected to be $10 higher.

This Beta is available for Windows 2000 and Windows XP only, and will expire on June 1st.

Hey Wooch, only 4?!

lol, actually I'm down to just 4 now too, but need to decide if I want to switch from the free ZoneAlarm firewall/AVG antivirus combo I've been using, and install the NIIS2005 I've had on my desk for 4 months now.

I also have an eval copy of CA PestPatrol 2005 still in the shrinkwrap!

I run :

eTrust Pest Patrol
SpySweeper
AdAware SE 1.05 Pro
Spybot S & D 1.4 Beta
MS AntiSpyware Beta

Whoops, that's 5, and now 6 w/ the Norton Product

I don't use NAV, I believe its bloatware. I really like eTrust EZ AV, I've been using it ever since it came out. We have the corporate edition of EAV @ work, which employs 2 scanning engines, VET & InnoculateIT, offering added protection. The EZ version only employs the VET engine, but doesn't, IMHO, "invade" your system as does NAV

Rip off that shrink wrap, PestPatrol is a great app, fastest scanner out of those listed above!! :approve:

When I installed MS Antispyware beta, it found 'stuff' that PestPatrol and AdAware didn't, so I uninstalled them. I am currently relying solely on the MS product. Is this a mistake?

In my opinion, yes. What if something comes out that the MS product doesn't detect, and the CA and AdAware products do? The MS product is good, no doubt about that, but the more the better, especially after a Mal/Spyware attack. You never know . . .

It is always a mistake to just rely on one product for this kind of stuff.

I find the programmes go in waves - with one finding somethings the others don't - but two weeks later it will be one of the other ones :approve:

(EDIT - beaten to the punch by Wooch - again )

OK, ok STOPPPPP!!! I am not, repeat, AM NOT going to install the complete Norton Internet Security suite on my PC just to test out their beta spyware app. :bang:

Talk about bloatware, NIS is a major resource hog, installs a bunch of services, and slows down your machine. Why can't they make an solely "AntiSpy" beta availible?

Fulltetxt, am I missing something, or can I just install the AntiSpyware portion?

Spyware is the enemy, spyware removal apps are the army. The more soldiers in your army, the better your chances of winning the war . . .

Sorry Wooch, I should have been more clear, it is the entire NIS2005 application. Symantec has no plans to release a standalone AntiSpyware app.

Note to the other posters, yes you need multiple apps to protect as they don't all catch the same things. I've had it happen a few times now where Spybot S&D, AdAware, MS, SpyHunter, or PestPatrol free version in Yahoo Toolbar, would detect and clean something the others didn't. The latest being SpywareStormer which I can't seem to permanently get rid of!

Thanks FullText. I forgot about the Yahoo! Toolbar, which is indeed a free version of Pest Patrol. A "must add" to the Anti-Spyware arsenal . . .

Any link to any freeware Spyware handy so I won't have to go through dozens to get the good one. At this point after rebuilding this laptop I have no Spyware installed and no SPAM so far. I have AV and maintain it (I am not that stupid)

I couldn't agree more. When I upgraded to NIS 2005, it nearly gagged my desktop. :rolling:
