New Laptops

Thought this might be the only place to bring this up, but when is Dell deciding to put laptops on the lineup? When will they put upgrades to 6000 and 600m? I'm really, really considering buying one and I don't want to buy one when the upgrade is just around the corner, does anyone have an answer for me?

I would say very soon. I believe they are clearing inventory to make room for the new models. Same thing with the desktops. Be assured that you'll pay top $ for the new series, at least at first . . .

Agreed, my thinking also, perhaps new models before end of June.

There is always a new model just around the corner. Just be careful you don't keep trying to chase technology or you will end up never buying a laptop. :)

Though I do agree with wooch. With the dual cores now coming out several manufacturers, including Dell, have stated they will be offering these in their systems as soon as they are available.

Duel cores!!! *me drueling*

I'm probably not going to purchase one until July or August, when Back-to-School sales come around. But, I just don't want to purchase an outdated model, I'll wait for the new laptops to come out. I'm looking at 1.6ghz, 512mb, DVD+/-R burner, 40-80gb HD, undecided on XGA or SXGA+... Well, thanks for the information.

My Inspiron 6000 that I received on Tuesday may end up going back, I'm still on the fence about it. I love the machine, except for the "display sparkle" issue I'm experiencing. It's definitely a known issue. Basically, you see little light grey "flecks" throughout the screen. Dell support maintains that it's an "Anti-Glare feature, but I saw another 6000 with the same panel, and it does not exibit this phenomenon. I'm actually starting to get used to it, but not sure if this is how it's supposed to be. Just a heads up for folks considering this. Also, it's been confirmed on several different Inspiron models, not just the 6000.

Well that's good to know, do you have the XGA or SXGA+ screen?

I have the W(ide)XGA panel. I knew that I wouldn't use resolutions higher than 1280 X 800, so I went with the standard panel. It looks fine, just this "sparkly" phenomena. I am going to take it over to the Dell Kiosk in the mall today and see if I can compare it with another Inspiron 6000. Again, I'm getting used to it, but not sure that it should look like this. I have a little over 2 weeks left to return or get a brand new replacement. We'll see what happens . . .

One thing I found odd is that the Dell support site mentions this phenomenon for the WUXGA panel, but I have WXGA. Strange . . .

YEAH, DUH!! Sorry about that, forgot to mention that it's WXGA, forgot to include the Widescreen. Yeah, I think I'm going to go with WXGA, that WSXGA+ provides a bunch of screen space that I don't think I really, truly need. Have you tried seeing what the resolution goes up to? I saw a Inspiron 6000 that had a low resolution, but it was actually a WUXGA screen, you think they could have given you the wrong screen?

My display panel has a maximum resolution of 1280 X 800, which I knew would be fine. Any smaller and I'd be miserable.

Yeah, that's probably what I'm going to go with and bump up the processor speed so that I can have a 1.86ghz Pentium M (more like a 3.2ghz Pentium 4) and so that it can run "Windows Longhorn" when it comes out, I'm sure 1200x800 is good enough. I think it's like 89.1 DPI or something, which isn't really that bad.

I went with the 2.0 GHz Centrino Processor and a gig of RAM. Should be good to go for longhorn. I can always bump it up to 1.5 or 2 GB RAM down the road if needed . . .

I recently purchased a Dell I6000D myself and love it. I opted for the WUXGA wide screen and it is so clear and sharp you could cut yourself on it. I had to adjust the font size a bit larger and I use cleartype too. This laptop has completely replaced my desktop which is now sitting quietly in the closet. Dell had a 34% off deal so I was able to get this laptop loaded to the gills with including 4 year exchange for $2000.00. Then I bought my Axim X50v to go with it because they go so well together. :)

I highly recommend the I6000D to anyone looking for a new laptop.
