The LifeDrive also boasts a large 320x480 high-resolution color screen which can flip from landscape to portrait mode, a speedy 416MHz Intel XScale processor plus built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless networking. The smaller-than-a-matchbook 4 GB hard drive is a Hitachi Microdrive, and it transfers data 30 percent faster than the previous-generation Microdrive. That means you can get to your stored music, images and data more quickly.
Looks like palm is ready to give the ppc a run for its money!!!
im not crazy about the built in HD, ive said several times i would like to see one with a second CF slot under the battery. where you could add a Microdrive if you want.
and of course you could also add a extra cf card for those who want a solid state solution. another thing this would be ideal for is have a large storage device in your axim and still use a CF I/O
defragementation, vibrating, noise, heat, lots of power consumtion, slow, unreliable, WOW i love Hard drives!
what happens when you set it next to a magnet?
Have you ever actually TESTED that? Nowadays you really would need one heck of a magnet to do any real damage.
BTW, I've been very tossed on the hard drive idea. If they make one that uses no more power than a CF card I'm game, BUT only if there's a large chunk of cache memory as well. You'd want it working more like HDD-based MP3 players, where it temporarily copies the files it needs from the drive to memory. This way, while you're using an app, everything is being done in memory and not on the drive itself. This helps to cut down on the chance of the unfortunate accident of jarring/shaking (or dropping) the Axim while the HDD is being written to or read from, and in turn damaging a head or something.

they shouldn't be the x50v still has a faster processor, VGA screen, intel 2700g, and wga out.
you cant compare the two really. yeah the x50 has a better screen and graphics capabilities. the palm also doesnt need to have as much processesing power because of low overhead of the os.
its like comparing apples to oranges.
i think i read somewhere that it caches to 32 megs(problay more like 28)

I'm just saying, for a palm, it looks like an amazing device. As was stated, palm OS, and its apps aren't very demanding, so a 416mHz xscale will give amazing performance! Not to mention palm finally jumped on the wireless boat, and the device alone looks very sexy...
Again, when comparing a palm and a ppc, mHz really dont mean a whole lot, because palm OS is very resource friendly, and well, WM2003 isn't... I would wager that if there was an app that was identical for both platforms, it would prolly be faster on the new palm than on an X30!
