I'm totally new to the Axim scene, and while I am blown away by the Axim x50v's capabilities thus far, I find myself extremely incompetent when it comes to PDA technology. Moreover, as a beginning 3rd year med student, I am having a hard time finding "affordable" (meaning free when I'm looking at over $150,000 in loans already) med programs. I was wondering if anyone out there has any advice or helpful hints for me on this one?

What sort of medical programs are you looking for? There's a ton of stuff out there!
Epocrates isn't a bad start, and Skyscape will provide you with Archimedes for free...... most others are trial programs.
There's quite a lot out there but the quality varies dramatically.
You DO get what you pay for :)
Free medical software can be tough. If you have access to pharmaceutical reps and ask nice, they may be able to help. I have received a Mobile Merck Medicus which has some interesting stuff(including the Merck Manual), although I couldn't get it to work. I have also received mobile versions of the Sanford Guide and Harrison's. Sometimes they may be able to provide a gift certificate for ePocrates subscriptions. You can dowhload the Mobile PDR for free from their website. Also, check with your administration or bookstore. They probably have discounts on software downloads. Do a google search for American College of Cardiology downloads. You can get several guidelines, which are quite complete for download. Good luck!
Hey guys, my wife just bought me an Axim x50v for our anniversary and for starting Dental School. I'm in a similar boat looking for software. I downloaded a 5mdental program but didn't install it. It is a 15 free use then you must subscribe program. I'm a little suspicious it will never fully uninstall itself.
The question, do you have problems with installed software leaving residuals like a desktop version of windows? Has anybody heard of 5mdental?
This is the medical or peri-medical freeware that has stayed on my Axim so far (I've only had my Axim for about 2 weeks, so I'm still finalizing my list):
wiser (wireless information system for emergency responders) http://wiser.nlm.nih.gov - from national institutes of health, free reference on chemical, toxic, and biologic exposures
c-tools www.cancer.org/ctools - free reference tools of varying utility from the american cancer society
Plucker (www.plkr.org) and Vade Mecum (http://vade-mecum.sourceforge.net) to grab html content and carry it around with me. You can also save Word or other documents as HTML and use this as a viewer. It's not as good as iSilo, but it's not bad for free.
Another option, not to be underestimated, is to carry images around in specific photo albums (I have a series of anatomic slides, pictures of tick species, poisonous snakes, mushrooms, spiders, etc.) and I use the incuded Resco Viewer for instruction purposes, both for patients and for residents/students.
calc98 http://www.calculator.org/download.html - freeware general purpose calculator (apparently has mandatory but free registration after 90 days - I haven't hit 90 days yet!)
I found there was significantly more medical freeware for the PalmPilot, but as I said, I'm still new to this platform. One option is to buy the PalmPilot simulator that runs on PPC's and then use the PalmPilot freeware (check out the offerings at StatCoder.com, e.g.)
You must look at it as an investment. OU dental school is relatively cheap but will still probably cost me about 95k just for school. The problem is that some people go crazy with the "low interest" loan money under the assumption they will make some sort of absorbent amount of money upon graduation that can both pay off their loans and feed their needs upon release from the monetary deprivation of school. My brother bought an S2000 w/ his loan money and really nice 1.something caret ring for his also pharmacy fiancée. You think they will leave cheap and just pay loans when they graduate (that was sarcastic)?

Thanks for the med. program links!!
yeah, i plan being very very VERY tight with money until it's paid off...
oh and i think you'll find a lot more medical(-related) software for palm so for us that means get styletap (program that let's ya run most palm software), they've got a trial version right now
iSilo has lots of good stuff, works on palm or PPC
the best $50.00 I ever spent was on Clinical Medicine Consult which runs on iSilo. 90% of medicine is in there and easily accessed
great for rotations. Read the section before and during that rotation and you'll definitely look like a gunner!
