In terms of non-fiction, Hitler: Hubris (Vol I) by Ian Kershaw.

Read all these except the Elizabeth Moon series. The others were great and some of my all time favorites.
Recently have read a couple of great series by Tad Williams: Otherland and dragon bone chair.

What?!? Am I the first to mention The Lord Of The Rings!?

Ok, my new favorites are The Farseer trilogy and their sequal The Tawny Man trilogy by Robin Hobb. If you are a fan of fantasy, do yourself a favor and read them. They're terrific.

I found the Tad Williams books to be... I dunno long winded, like the Wizard's first rule. Good, but too much minutae.

I read Lord of the Rings several times and struggled through the Similarion a time or 2. I'd like to place it actually above the level of 'books' and place it in the genre of Classical Literature.. like War and Peace, etc.

If you liked my selections try the Elizabeth Moon books, it is pretty cool in conceptualizing a fantasy militia company and the roles of Clerics and Paladins... Very cool for the D&D crowd.

My two fav books have to be A National Party No More: the Conscisus of a Conservative Democrat, and a Deficit of decencey, both by the former Senator from the great state of georgia Zell Miller.

How about David Weber's "Honor Harrington" series? If like Elizabeth Moon, I think you'd like Weber's stuff too. (First book is in the Baen Free Library: On Basilisk Station

I don't read too many books for pleasure. But, a couple that stand out are Picoverse and Giuliani's Book Leadership.

Picoverse is a scifi novel that gets into alternate dimensions. Leadership is about Giuliani's experiences as a leader and what he has learned over his life. It is a good book regardless of your politicial opinions.

The first, but not the only one :approve: Why, because the three books (coupled with The Hobbit)were the original British mythologies.
