my first love  Any Stephen King (well, ok... The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon was lame but still...) particularly The Stand and the entire Dark Tower series :approve:

non-SK books I recommend:

A Prayer For Owen Meany by John Irving

The Power Of One by Bryce Courtenay

The Big Sleep - Raymond Chandler. Incredibly witty, clever and exciting.

I don't think anything by L Ron can really be described as a good read... (whatever you think about him or his 'beliefs' )

Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig
Why? Practical, sociologically interesting, suspenseful, and anything that involves a Dad's bond with his son, motorcycles, ghosts, and how to fix a motorcycle with a beer can is just great, clean fun.

My favorites change with time but Steinbeck's "East of Eden" was the first book I thought 'Wow'. That was almost 30 years ago.

This thread is pretty interesting. My sterotyped image of readers of the site would presume that reading interests would be limited to science fiction. It turns out that almost all aspects of literature are represented.

Careful with those sterotypes.

The Fair Tax Book.

It explains how we came to have the current tax system and provides an alternate solution to being taxed on what we earn.

He has a lot that are general for kids, I am not sure there is anything specific for girls. He states that he wrote this one on raising boys because of the societal disadvantages boys are at right now.
